Hi
A fanatic of Chi sent this to a forum. What do you think about him comparing physics with metaphysics?

According to modern physics, in all
the universe there are only 4 forces acting
on matter: gravity, electro/magnetism, and
the strong and weak nuclear forces. These
forces are supposedly held together by a 5th
force, the Unied Field Theory.

Three thousand years ago, the Chinese
said roughly the same thing... there are 5
forces: the tendency to expand out in all
directions, (the Wood element phase) the
tendency to rise, (the Fire element phase)
the tendency to sink, (the Water element
phase) and the tendency to contract. (the
Metal element phase) These 4 energy phases
are held together by the 5th Phase, (the
Earth element phase) which contains all
the others. From now on, I will not refer to
those 5 Phases of Energy Transformation
as "Elements" because they are not "things",
they are forces that eventually transform
into each other.

All that stuff is just prehistoric physicists trying to understand nature with their limited resources. They used those crude concepts to describe the world.

Nowadays we start with our much more sophisticated understanding and say things like "gravity is sort of like the water element phase!" Except when it isn't. It seems laughable that people are using "gravity" to describe and qualify "water element phase" when in fact "water element phase" is just a very archaic way of describing and qualifying the effects of gravity.

there was no evidence for other things years ago. So what?

You need to understand the scientific method.

1) Bob makes claim that energy X exists.

2) Energy X is assumed not to exist because there is currently no evidence for it.

3) Bob goes out and collects evidence.

4) Once enough evidence has been accumulated, energy X is accepted as part of science.

It is perfectly rational for me not to believe in chi until it is proven. This might result in me being wrong, but it ensures that new ideas are screened for quality BEFORE they are accepted.

I will gladly change my POV if you can show me experiments that indicate what you believe.

I have taken Chi to mean a mixture of posture, full body movement and breathing as oppossed to some mysterious life force that many qigong and tai chi practioners claim.
