'Psychic Detectives' video

youtube is down for maintainance at the moment (7:30am 4/10), so I didn't get to see the video. I'll check again later.

Very sorry to hear about your father. I observed the first anniversary of losing my mother (to cancer) on Sunday 4/2. It appears that my wife is but weeks away from losing her mother to cancer as well. Kind of makes for a pretty depressing vibe about our family. You have my complete empathy. I wish I could say/do more.

The video is back up and running.

Nice job, Richard. Very nice, actually.

I'm glad they cut the camera over to you laughing your ass off while she was spouting off about the CIA and FBI having remote viewers on staff.

Beautiful work. Thank you!

i see these psychic detective shows here in the states and they annoy me greatly- they come on channels that people generally believe are "educational" and they present the information in such a way that a trusting person would think "wow, i didnt realize there were so many murders/crimes/mysteries solved by psychics. i guess they really do exist." i have done some follow up research on some of the cases i have seen on those shows just to see the other side of the story. it is a prime example of how misleading television can be. i dont sweat over fears of the conspiracies of news networks, but i do believe news and television have an unbelievable impact on us.

Before I became actively interested in skepticism (I thought psychics were BS, but didn't care too much), I remember seeing a show where police officers were being trained to "hone their psychic abilities." One of the exercises was for remote viewing, and the "teacher" held up an envelope with a picture inside and asked to officers to draw what was inside. In order to do so, she said, they had to close their eyes and "come to a quiet place" in order to be most receptive.

My husband, who was already a skeptic, said, "It's going to be a picture with a lot of things, any one of which will be considered a hit. I'm guessing by the prompts she's giving that it'll be a cabin in the woods on a lake or something." Sure enough, he hit it on the head, and everyone who drew so much as something tree-like or houselike or even a rectangle was praised for their perception. Such psychic detective shows annoy me now.

Great job, Richard :)

You're a better man than I for not just telling that psychic to shut her bulls**t hole - as others have said, the flying carpet reply was fantastic too.

I was impressed by the vagueness of the psychic's answers (paraphrasing).
Q. "Have you worked with the police"
A. "No, but I've worked with the family of a murder victim. I gave information to the police"
Q. "Did the information help in solving the crime?"
A. "The crime wasn't solved..."
I was unsure at this point whether she meant that no one had been arrested, or that they arrested someone for the crime but she was claiming that it was the wrong person (as they didn't fit her description, undoubtedly).

Personally, psychic programmes do annoy me a lot - the one I saw most recently was almost entirely an interview with the `psychic' herself, and you can say you made any predictions after the fact

I just wished you'd said "Are these the same remote viewers that said people were living on Mars in the year one million B.C.? Because they were."

Good work.

Nice. But, as usual, when there's a "balanced" report (i.e. one skeptic, one "woo"), the psychic made all kinds of unsubstantiated claims.

Richard (and anyone who debates a "woo") - next time a claim is made, jump in and ask for references; Who showed psychic ability? When? Where? And don't let it pass - how often have psychic, clairvoyents, mediums, etc., made outrageous claims. What happens? People are intrigued. But then, there's no follow-up. The skeptics know what this means, but the non-critical thinkers are left to assume it must be true. Sorry to go on. I'm just reminded of a time I saw Randi on TV in a similar "well-balanced" discussion. The psychic (or whatever), made claims, Randi asked for evidence, and the psychic said, basically, "It's out there."

Thanks for the video.

Ha! That was awesome.

I had to pause the video a few times, because that psychic was making me so mad. And depressed. So many lovely claims. So many times those two hosts lobbed her easy questions, just giving her openings to do her spiel. And they're all polite and "let's agree to disagree" as soon as Richard actually asks her to back up what she says. Gah. I mean, I realize this must have been some fluff morning news thing, but still. Gah.

Keep fighting the good fight, Richard. There's too few of us and too many like that psychic lady. And like those hosts.

Great job, Richard, and thanks for sharing the lovely video of your Dad and family.
