Protools - iLok

Any members here using Protools as a DAW?

I currently use Protools 10 (and others) and recently had my iLok USB device just stop working for apparently no reason. 50 bucks for a new one, and they may or may not be able to retrieve licenses off the thing. Not cool!

So, is there any way to not use it with Protools? I'm not really looking foward to this week with no way to use Protools. (until they get my iLok and retrieve info from it) I still have the installation DVD's and such, so the key isn't an issue. It's just the stupid USB iLok device that failed.

Back when I used PT, you could use ProTools without the iLock, but you couldn't access your plug-ins that had the certification stored on the key. It may be that ProTools now stores its own certification there now, which would really suck. Ugh! River, I am sorry, I don't know that there's a whole lot that can be done. Just hope for the best. What a massive pain!

Yeah unfortuntely, Protools 10 will not even open without the iLok active. It is a very poor design IMHO, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that has suffered down time because of it. Yeah definitely a massive pain! lol

It's tempting even when I own the app. (it's a 600$ app!!) So lame for them to design it that way.

Are there any competing products you can use? Hardware copy protection schemes suck, and a software publisher who won't replace a failed hardware key for a $600 product free of charge by having it Fedexed to you by next day air sucks even worse.

If at all feasible, I would tell them to stick it, and use a competing product.

I'm a PT user and wondered about iLok failures, not just for Pro Tools, but I also have licenses to my virtual instrument packages stored on it as well. Something about "all your eggs in one basket."

Actually I'm a little peeved that my install disks have been stolen and want to reload the studio on another system. I'm hoping the iLok proves I'm licensed and the disks can be shipped for a reasonably small fee. Anyone have this happen?

I'm currently using Cubase as my DAW. It came with its own iLok-esque key, and I have another one for my VST kit (The Dark Side).

You may want to contact the company to see if they can help you in the event of a failed iLok. They're expensive, as you've said. Maybe it's still under warranty?

My understanding is that you need an online ilok account to use the dongle. All your keys, registration info, codes etc are on that online account. Just get a new ilok (and send an angry letter/email to ilok), plug it in, log in and download all the authentications.
