Should prostitution be legal? and when yes, from what age on?

In my country it is totally legal to work as a prostitute when you are 16 or older.

There are since a long time debates about that.

Prostitution is seen as a economic sector and from on 16 you don't have to go to school anymore and are allowed to work. this includes prostitution if you want.

what do you think? is 16 ok or should it be 18 or 21?

In the US 18 would likely be required, because you are not legally an adult and able to enter into agreements before that age. So allowing anything younger would run into conflict with a lot of other laws.

Should prostitution be legal?

Yes, with some minimal laws ensuring that it isn't coerced, and also regarding health and safety.

and when yes, from what age on?

Whatever the age of consent is in the relevant locale.

well im fine with 18 or even 21, but 16 strikes me as wrong.
on the other hand, i have to agree with George Carlin :)

No,it shouldn't be legal at all, what he nass is wrong with you people?

I thought we were supposed to be better than animals.

Should rape be legal? Why not? Gotta copulate right? We're just animals anyways.

I don't have a personal problem with prostitution being legal, but it would have to be controlled more strictly than, say, massage parlors (ones with no happy endings, obviously). Namely, we'd have to go to lengths to make pimping as difficult as possible, perhaps making the only legal form of prostitution self-employment. It would also be necessary to make sure the social security network is tight enough so that no one is forced to the field. Of course, that's necessary now, too.

I did not realize animals had money.

have you ever seen a animal documentation?
Monkeys don't make an agreement first, the client monkey doesn't shower first, he is rough unfriendly she has no say what he is allowed and what not, and to top all that, he doesn't even pay.

we are better animals morally seen.

Since stealing a TV is illegal, it should also be illegal to buy one?

yes that is a very important point i think. its not only pimps forcing girls into the business.

The debate over age aside, why shouldn't it be legal? (Assuming it's consensual on the part of all parties, of course.)

I fail to see the moral or ethical problem with legalized prostitution.

ETA:

In fact, it seems likely that legalisation would make things far better for the prostitutes themselves. Under the current system, what is a prostitute who gets beat up to do? Go to the police?

There is issues of risks and ability to understand them. Being a kept woman or how ever you want to call it, but being paid for by a likely older wealthy man would rate differently in my view than servicing a large number of different customers. That I would lower the bar for.

It is the difference between say a 14 year old choosing to have sex with a 16 year old and not wanting to criminalize that action and condoning a 14 year old selling herself to 16 year olds.

Sex between consenting adults should be legal, regardless of the motivation for that sex. I think 16 is too young (not really adult). I think 18 would be more appropriate.

Could you elaborate on why you feel it is reasonable to compare prostitution (a consensual act between two adults... if we assume the age thing resolved to be around 18ish) to rape.

Also no-one is saying that prostitution should be legal because we need to copulate.

I would say punishing people for consensual activity which harms no one is acting worse than animals.

Non-sequitor, appeal to emotion, and betrays that Bynmdsue has no logical argument to back his position.

Why is it that prostitution is illegal (in almost all of the U.S.) but being paid to have sex in a pornographic movie isn't?

I have always wondered, would hiring a prostitute be legal if you give a friend $5 to film it?
