Proof that Materialism is Dead

I don't get it - how does making me look at this thread prove that materialism is dead? If it's this easy, then why hasn't Ian tried it?

Oh...wait...I see. This is a joke! AH... phew, that was close - my firmly closed mind almost lost it's fanatical grip on the narrow scientistic reality it clings to. Long live the P-zombie King!

D'OH!

I had my first comment ready to go the moment I saw the title. "I didn't know materialism was living thing in the first place."

evildave,

I was beginning to think no one would get the implication - thanks!

How long before this turns into an actual thread about materialism v/s immaterialism?

Oh oh, I wanna be in. :j1: I don't know squat about what materialism or immaterialism is, but if it is postmodern I suppose I could take part in the debate and no one would notice that I don't know anything.

Yes, but when you take the sock away, does the hand remain?!

Materialism:
Materialism is a general view about what actually exists. Put bluntly, the view is just this: Everything that actually exists is material, or physical. Many philosophers and scientists now use the terms `material' and `physical' interchangeably (for a version of physicalism distinct from materialism, see physicalism). Characterized in this way, as a doctrine about what exists, materialism is an ontological, or a metaphysical, view; it is not just an epistemological view about how we know or just a semantic view about the meaning of terms.

If materialism is dead, then it is true that there is an essence of existence beyond the material. So things that appear dead in the physical world still exist in the other realm. Thus, materialism is not dead!

The thread title contains within it the seeds of its own destruction.

Yes, but for materialism to be debunked, wouldn't some kind of proof that materialism had no explanatory or predictive values be required?

Something like discovering tiny little demons on exercise bikes make transistors work, that sort of thing.

The pointless sillyness should be in full gear by page two...
