processor upgrade

If a motherboard is rated as "Supports up to a 2800 processor" is there a danger of damaging the system by putting in a higher processor, such as a 3000, or is the motherboard simply incapable of using the full potential of the higher processor?

These days usually you can't even fit the processor on the slot. The faster and newer processor will have a different pin number and arrangement.

But if it does fit, could it cause problems?

I'm replacing a damaged 2600, the manufacturer rates the motherboard up to a 2800, and the closest shops don't have the 2600 or 2800 in stock. I'm kind of pressed for time getting the comp back online, so if a 3000 fits and runs, I would just go with that... if it won't cause further damage that is.

I wouldn't expect any problems, but perhaps you should specify the motherboard and processor to be on the safe side. P4 ? And what motherboard ?

Certainly I have done this before. When we bought a bunch of mobos and cpus for upgrades. Some of the cpus failed (it's a long story) but the mobos were fine. Not only could we use higher-rated processors than the mobo box said it was rated for, but after a bios flash, they were able to recognize them properly. This may not be the norm, though.

Cheers,
Rat.

Thanks for all the answers. I got it up and running, so it seems like it'll be just fine.

Until the next part frags, that is.. ;)
