Problem with laptop Audio

Hey all

I've noticed a strange problem with my laptop sound which I am hoping someone knows an obvious answer to

When I play mp3s through windows media player the sound modulates terribly. It is a really annoying volume swell every second or 2. I tried CDs and it does the same, and it also does it in quicktime and creative mediasource player, and changing the headphones I use doesn't stop it either. So I presume it is a hardware/driver type problem rather than a software problem?

Any thoughts or other things to try would be much appreciated

P.S. Other info that might be useful: Windows XP; laptop is a NEC Versa E6100 with 2Gb RAM.

Any audio driver updates available from NEC? Check their website for hardware driver updates. Maybe it is a bug with a particular audio card they were using.

Diagnosis 101

Download geexbox from http://geexbox.org/en/downloads.html and burn it to a CD. Boot from the CD, and put in a CD or DVD to play. If it plays OK, your problem is with Windows XP or your audio drivers. If it plays with the volume swells, then it's your hardware, and you can get if fixed under warranty. If it doesn't play sound at all, then geexbox doesn't work with your hardware and you're no better off in the diagnosis
