Old saying: He who enters the conclave as a Pope, leaves it as a Cardinal. I predict something similar this time. None of the favorites.
 
European, but not Eastern European. They want to pick an Italian, but won't because it will seem like they're going Italo-centric again. They'll compromise by picking someone from Western Europe. They won't pick a young guy because they thought JP2 had too long a reign. He'll be at least seventy. Maybe a Frenchman, or a German. English a long shot. Definitely not Irish. Quiet, stick-at-home, reflective type, who'll make a few firm but noncontroversial pronouncements over the years, and not travel so much.

The cardinals will not want to risk new papacy as long as the last.
 
If the pope is supposed to be God's representative on earth..

And since the Cardinals' election process is to find out the will of God.....

And, in effect, God himself is chosing the Pope...

Why don't we get white smoke on the first ballot?

LOL I only needed one try!

All in all an easy guess. I think any real change was a little wishful. My genuine condolences to the many progressive Catholics who are gradually finding themselves homeless.
