WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has submitted his resignation to President Bush, the White House said on Monday.

Powell is the most prominent of four Cabinet officials whose resignations will be announced Monday, sources told CNN.

The others will be Agriculture Secretary Anne Veneman, Education Secretary Rod Paige and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, the sources said.

Powell told his senior staff that he planned to stay on until a replacement was confirmed, State Department officials said.

State Department officials told CNN that Bush and Powell decided mutually that it was time for him to go.

Yeah, and while you're at it, purge the CIA

"The agency is being purged on instructions from the White House," said a former senior CIA official who maintains close ties to both the agency and to the White House. "Goss was given instructions ... to get rid of those soft leakers and liberal Democrats. The CIA is looked on by the White House as a hotbed of liberals and people who have been obstructing the president's agenda."

Perhaps the purge is to get rid of incompetents. I, among others, bitched when the Iraq war was laid at their doorstep and no one was shot much less fired. Now he is doing it and I am supposed to complain? You mistake me for Michael Moore, methinks.

Way ahead of you.

At this point, good guy liberals should dutifully note that the CIA has a whole lot of systematic problems, and the 9/11 report even says, so it may well be that painful changes are what is required. Bad liberals should keep silent, although they may note to themselves that the two massive intelligence screw-ups which brought about the need for commission reports with tales of systemic problems, 9/11 and the Iraq WMD fiasco, both happened under the watch of this Administration, and with copious evidence of top-level negligence and meddling surrounding each one.

The single one member of the Bush administration with decency and a gift for diplomacy resigns.

So who's next?

Perhaps you would be willing to inform me as to the specific achievements of his "gift for diplomacy"?

He got about ten minutes on prime-time news programs in the UK this evening. Wouldn't expect Condi or Rumsfeld to get that much.

Maybe he could move here and marry Prince William...

Well, since the art of diplomacy is extremely disreputable among Bush and his cronies he didn't have much of a chance, did he.
I think he might have succeeded to pursuade more countries to act against Iraq, if he'd had more credible evidence than he actually presented to the UNSC and if he had been given more time.
I also think he can claim credit for the fact that there actually is still some sort of dialogue going on between the US and the "old Europe". But I doubt that you will regard that as an achievement.

:D Translation: zero achievements.

Powell was the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time. Like everything else in his life, he got to be secretary through "affirmative action". During his career as secretary, he much enjoyed schmoozing with the dictators' representatives at the U.N. and elsewhere, not realizing that they had contempt for him behind his back. He represented the state department, another historic weak link in american government, to the president, rather than seeing that the self-important bureaucrats there carried out the president's orders. This is another cabinet post that is just crying out for strong leadership.

I don't see why you quote like that... doesn't your screen have a "Quote" button?

Zee but conveniently omitted by Patrick But I doubt that you will regard that as an achievement.

Originally posted by Patrick said:

Do you really think that the other posters in this forum need your translation?

Zee

P.S: Try and learn to quote correctly, your posts are a mess.
