Possible Norton Antivirus hijack

I'm concerned that Symantec's Norton Antivirus 2005 & at least 2006 may be being targeted by spyware of a most insidious type.

I have come across two Dell computers of similar builds running Symantec softwre within the last week from vastly different backgrounds with identical symptoms that are not spotted by lavasoft webroot sbsd symantec avg er...
 
Sounds the sort of stuff, Jekyll. I tell the punters - "Just think - you're at the cutting edge of the technological struggle" - while they laugh I try not to panic.
 
Nope, doesn't work

Norton has issued a removal tool for what appears to be a resurgence of a worm called W32.Spybot.ACYR. This is panic. The tool does not seem to work on the new outbreak.
