PARIS The war in Iraq has widened the rift between the United States and the rest of the world, with a steep plunge in Americans' views of their traditional allies and a further surge of anti-Americanism in Muslim countries, a global opinion survey shows.
.
The poll of more than 15,000 people in 20 countries and the Palestinian Authority, conducted in May by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center, also showed a significant loss of faith in two major international institutions created out of the ashes of World War II - the United Nations and NATO.

What possible implications does this have for the future?

Simple. If the population of country X does not like the US, then it puts pressure on country's X democratic government. It can go as far as government official supporting the US being voted out of office.

So, if the US wants to have foreign government cooperative to them (for war on terror, etc) without fear of repercussion from their people, they need to gain popular support. These repercussion can be seen in Britain and Spain, where the war on Iraq was highly unpopular. It possible, in my opinion, that they won't make it alive after the next elections.

That's just my view of it. As the world's most powerful nation, you CAN say screw world opinion, but it gets harder to get support from democratic countries if you do that. (Even the US needs ally in the world, to deploy troops, etc)

Edited to add: Damn, if it wasn't for international events, I would love international politics. ;)

The world may come to realize that it doesn't need the US dollar anymore and that it can do for itself without US capitalism.

Think where that would leave the US worker!

Not likely, bit IF that did happen, I think there would be a world war.

We can only guess what the outcome of that would be.

I agree its not likely, but why would there possibly be a world war?

If this did happen, it would be a gradual process over decades and might be accompanied by more economic pain in the US, if the US failed to forsee the trend and didn't prepare for it. But who would the US go to war against; and why?
