I also want to get a consensus on if we should limit our endeavor to political books?

My inclination is we should simply because that in itself is a large and diverse topic.

At the same time, I don't see why suggestions and reviews of non-political material couldn't be included, even if it doesn't make it to the official reading list.

I suggest we keep it mostly to politics. The advantage of politics is that we are all approximately as well informed and can post meaningful thoughts.

For example, if we picked a book about evolution, then the discusion would be dominated by the people who have a good background in evolution and biology. Others could certainly learn but would not have much to contribute.

I say mostly because there are some non-political books that are written for the intelligent laymen and provide good food for thought. For example, I heard Gladwell lecture about Blink and it appears to be accessible to all.

Exactly! But if there is something that is just plain jaw-dropping exceptional....then we should allow that on a provisional basis. Hell, we don't want to miss out on something great!

As for our reading list....please PLEASE no polemics! Or if we just must read one then it should be counterpointed by the very next selection.

Yes, Blink and The Tipping Point are not political books. They are, IMHO, exception books, and very accessible.

Oh damn, I was just going to recommend Slander and Treason, both by Ann Coulter. :(

At least I won't have to read anything by that baboon Al Franken. :)

Yes politics is quite a diverse topic but we must decide. Is the global warming, politics?

Let's decide that before shanek appears. :D

BTW I voted for the option 2.It's more flexible.

Lets see how it goes here first of all.

If it is successful it may be an idea to open a general "Book Club" run the same way and give it its own full blown section.
