Plotting an Illinois SkeptiCamp

Howdy all,

Upon finding out at TAM7 about the SkeptiCamp website, I have begun plotting most dark & dire...

Upon returning from Dragon*Con, I hope to start planning an Illinois SkeptiCamp. We have a number of skeptically-oriented type meetup groups around the northern section of the state, as well as down near Urbana-Champaign, as well as the CFI-Chicago bunch.

Suggestions? Ideas? Rude jokes?

Cheers - MM

Of course, Reed is the man to go to for suggestions.

I suggest we have a Battle of the SkeptiCamps! We'll see which one is better: Yours in Illinois or mine in New York City! Yeah!! We can take you on! We got better bagels than you do! Ha!

I'm kidding about the battle, of course. SkeptiCamps are about sharing, not competition or anything. But, I am seriously hoping to put one together in NYC.

Nothing wrong with a little competition among friends.

Last February Atlanta kicked everyone's butt with more speakers (17?) than we in Colorado had seen at our first couple of experimental events. In terms of pure participation they've set the bar for the rest of us to meet.

And they'll be sure to let you know it -- ask that trash talking Joe Anderson :)

However, we (in Colorado) followed up a few months later by having more talks than we could fit in two rooms with an overall turnout about 90 people. So for this brief moment Colorado remains the flagship.

So don't let a little cow-town like Denver outshine you big city slickers! It's time you showed us how it's done.

ps, as you may have seen, I've been building up the new mediawiki-based skepticamp.org website which should serve as a solid base from which to collaborate on developing and documenting those practices that seem to work best for the skeptic community.

I understand you can get a look at the trash-talking Joe Anderson in the photo from TAM of all the Colorado attendees. You guys really should check papers :)

We'll start plotting our next SkeptiCamp after DragonCon. Now that we know what we're doing, all the other SkeptiCamps will be fighting for second place.

I for one am eager to see what you shirtless hill-folk in Georgia will offer for your second event. :)

Later today I'll be meeting with the presumptive organizers of our next event in Colorado. They are eager to get things rolling and have ambitious plans.

And an announcement: the original home of SkeptiCamp at barcamp.org is now officially retired. From here on out home is at http://skepticamp.org
