Yes, Sen. Roland Burris (D-Blagojovich) appears to have publicly contradicted his testimony before the Illinois House Impeachment panel. Before, no one asked him to pay for his Senate seat. Now he remembers that Blago's brother did just that.

Unless Harry Reid's testicles are still in retraction, perhaps he can arrange an Ethics investigation that might soon lead to Roland's ejection.

Maybe he just forgot about that bit, he's old you know.

What an embarrassment.

There's growing calls for his resignation. IL AG Lisa Madigan may start a perjury investigation.

Make no mistake, he should resign or the Senate should expell him, but he won't do the first and because of the race card the Senate won't have the guts to do the second.
I note that a lot of the columnists and commentators who were pushing heavily for BUrris to be seated seem to be quiet now....

Yeah, no chit on the reporters who were so loudmouthed about him getting in, but are suddenly quiet...

Besides that, he played the race card to get in, it should just as easily be trumped on his way out.

I recall Olbermann marvelling at his chutzpa and admiring his -stick-to-itiveness. Last night he was incredulous.

It seems he also did a bit of fundraising for Blago's reelection that he neglected to mention...
So he sometimes says, his story changes every time he tells it.

Interesting that even Jesse Jackson has refused to comment on this, when has that ever happened?

Bottom line: it stinks to high heaven.

In other Illinois politician news, former Chicago alderman Arenda Troutman was sentenced to 4 years in prison today.

 The Tribune is right on this one - Burris should step down.

My guess is he'll try to hang in there, kicking & screaming, until he's booted in the next Democratic primary election for that Senate seat. Either that or until he's arrested.

What a tool. I actually thought he was handling things well in the run-up to his testimony to the Illinois legislature. Now to find out the man was lying (yes, he lied - let's call it what it is) just sickens me.

Well, that's it. Fool me once, shame on you Mr. Burris. Fool me twice...

ETA: My hope is that Burris gets booted and that Gov. Pat Quinn can appoint someone trustworthy. We'll see what happens.

His chances to actually get elected to the seat in 2 years are not good, I think.

Thats why I am hoping he is able to last these 2 years and win the primary. That way my congressman, Mark Kirk, a very moderate and popular Republican who always wins in a very liberal district will have a VERY good shot at giving the GOP a chance to take an Illinois Senate seat for the first time in a while.

Ain't gonna happen. The Democrats in Illinois know that Kirk is probably the only Republican who has a decent chance at that 2010 Senate seat, so there's no way they're going to let Burris go up against him.

Burris is toast. And if the Democrats don't kick him loose in the primary in 2010, they deserve to lose the seat.

I wonder if Blago knew this would happen, and thought it would help him get revenge on the Democratic party for not rallying around him.

Of course as a Californian (and living in Sacramento no less) I should laugh. Apparently the state is going go over the abyss into bankruptcy because as few right wing talks show hosts are scaring a few GOP reps against voting for the budget package. "Rule or Ruin" seem to be the slogan of the California GOP.

I find myself watching the situation in Cali mouth agape in disbelief. I find it hard to fathom that the California GOP is so willing to just have the whole state run over a cliff financially just to prove their point about "sticking to their principles" - too bad their principles don't seem to involve any solutions or compromise in any form. :jaw-dropp

I think that the voters of California are not going to be kind to the GOP in the next state elections, especially when a popular GOP governor has taken his own party to task for their obstructionism.

The real problem is the Dems are not much better.
This a result of two things...
A: the rule that that the budget requires a 2/3 majority in the legislature. The goal of this, fiscal reponsibility on the part of the state legislature..is good, but the means has been a disaster. Getting rid of this rule...which seems to be some sort of political sibboleth in the state..would do a lot, but I don't see this happening.
B. A horrid reapportionment system for determning electorial districts. It has become a exercise in Gerrymandering, pure and simple. The Dems are willing to draw district lines that guarentee some right wing wingnuts get elected without fail if it give them enough "Safe" Democratic seats. and now it has finally turned around to bite them in the butt. There are very few competitive seats in California, which means few moderates and a lot of hard line ideologues on both sides. The only thing to wonder about is that disaster took this long to happen.
BUt I agree that the GOP thinking this is going to help them take control of the state by causing a meltdown is some of the most insane poltical reasoning I have seen.
But then the Dems are only marginaly better....
