Playing the Osama Bin Laden lotto...

Someone put together a neat little clip here speculating on whether or not Bush is planning to announce the capture of Bin Laden at a more politically oportune time.

Now, I despise Bush. And I don't trust him for a second. Still, I find this really really hard to swallow. Something like this wouldn't surprise me, yet still....

I'm just not convinced. Check out the clip though.

If OBL has been held in custody for some time then a number of people know he is in custody. Announcing his capture at a politically expedient time may encourge those people who are aware of the time of his capture to come forwards. If they were to do this then Bush would be greatly damaged.

A more possible scenario is that they know where he is and that he can't get away and are biding their time until the politically effective moment. Even in this case some service person may come forward to give the full story.

Catchy music....but the conspiracy theory needs work.

All this is is a bald attempt at creating a "damned-if-you-don't, damned-if-you-do" scenario. Tell me, how can Bush succeed here? If he can't catch OBL, he's incapable and the WOT is ineffective. If he produces OBL it's an evil conspiracy to "steal" another election.

I think it is ridiculous to believe that the US has bin Laden in custody and is waiting for an opportune time to announce the news. It is another testament (as if we needed more) to how people will believe what they want to be true. Granted, GWB has fed into it a bit by being such a weasel in many ways, but geez, he has the most wanted man in the world in custody and he's just sitting on him? All the people that know it know the biggest secret in the world but nobody is telling?

I can see the conversation now:

GWB: Dammit Dick, I say the Democratic Convention is the right time to tell people we've got bin Laden.

Cheney: No way, Mr. President. Late October, I tell you, late October.

Wasn't the news of Saddam Hussein's capture released in the middle of the night before a Sunday morning in the middle of the Christmas season? Can anyone think of a _worse_ time to release the news of his capture if the goal is maximum political impact? Couldn't they have kept him until the Democratic convention? Or until the middle of the Democratic primaries? Or at least wait 12 or 14 hours so that it would be Sunday evening and everyone would be in front of their TV and have a moment to remember when the breaking news interrupted the program they were watching?

Just because someone is a weasel in many ways doesn't mean every single thing they do is weasly. Just because Sylvia Browne weasels guillible people out of their hard earned money doesn't mean she steals food at the grocery store or runs red lights.

Maybe they think they know the area bin Laden is in and they'll put more heat on it this summer and fall. I wouldn't doubt that _if_ doing so would not increase the chance that he might escape. There have already been some embarrassing moments in Pakistan where the news came that "They've got someone big cornered" only to have them get away.

Can you imagine the news if they had bin Laden cornered but waited to get him just to help GWB's re-election chances and then he got away? The reverbations would go beyond the 2004 election and down into history. Can anyone think of a single act more heinous by a President in all of US history? Just because GWB does some bad things doesn't mean he is the total personification of evil. Even Hitler had a woman that loved him. Geez!

She kicks puppies, though. I have it on good authority. :D

Seriously though, I agree with you on this one I think. It's just too hard to believe. It's hard to believe that if this giant conspiracy existed, something wouldn't leak out.

IMO, the capture of OBL is the LEAST of Bush's problems now.

The mess Bush created in Iraq far outweighs the 'benefit' of finally(if ever) capturing the evildoer he promised to capture way back in 2001.

OBL's capture is WAY, WAY PAST DUE.

Honestly, I almost put the "kicks puppies" in my Sylvia example. You must be psychic.

I thought we probably killed OBL when we flattened all those bunkers in Tora Bora in Dec 2001. We haven't seen post-Dec 2001 video of him, all we're getting is (IMO, easily faked) audio.

He didn't have any problem in Nov. and Dec. releasing current video updates to his followers in the press. Now we've gone 2 1/2 years without one.

I really doubt he's been in custody all this time. Or on the loose.

Conspiracy theories?
You mean like how no one else ever notices that you never see Osama Bin Laden and Ann Richards together at the same time?
;)

That's my basic problem with conspiracy theories (and most agit-prop).

Invariably one is asked to believe that the stupid, incompetent, venal and malevolent bunglers who can't outthink a yam, are also sitting around perfecting elaborate machinations involving thousands of people all around the world.

The Wayans brothers had a great riff on that, where one of them was convinced that every morning, the Board of Directors of McDonalds got together to figure out ways to keep him from being promoted to french fry supervisor...

After thinking more, I think it'd be a good idea to actually do what the guy on that site is doing...having a prediction contest on when bin Laden will be captured (assuming he's not already dead and assuming he doesn't stay uncaptured indefinitely).

I wish I knew more about websites so I could set one up. I ought to take a class or something.

A couple thoughts on how such a site would have to be set up:

Each person would have to give an exact date for the capture _and_ the exact date on which the prediction was made would have to be captured.

We'd need an identifier. At first I thought e-mail address would be enough. But isn't it possible to get as many e-mail addresses as you want? If so, someone would just get a thousand e-mail addresses and make a prediction for every day and then when bin Laden was captured they'd say "See, I got it right." So maybe we'd need a name and town too, but at that point people might balk.

Oh well, it was a good idea while it lasted. And I don't know how to implement it anyway.

Judging by the pictures of both, I think Ann Coulter is really OBL after a sex change operation and a shaved beard

("They'd NEVER figure it out!")

Indeed. To be fair, that's true for ALL conspiracy theories, not just the Bush ones.
