Peculiar Win 7 Blinking Icon Problem

Yesterday, I had to do my first system restore on my PC and alles gut but one weird thing has begun to occur- every five seconds or so, my cursor blinks and I get the cursor pointer with the CD/DVD icon attached. It's not a catastrophic problem but it kind of makes me feel like it's disturbing the feng shui of my box.

Anybody else ever have this problem and if so, is it correctable, aside from doing something extreme like a full reinstall?

Is the CD/DVD drive actually running when it does that? Can you hear it spin or see the indicator lights running? Also, was there a virus or other malware involved in the reason for the restore? I ask both questions because it sounds like a process keeps trying to run.

BTW, this is the wrong subforum for this sort of question. I've reported the OP to get the thread moved. You should get a much better turn out in "Computers and the Internet".

I just caught that message, so thans for the correction....

No, no disc activity- the root of the problem was that I occasionally get a BSOD related to a file called afd.sys; I haven't bothered to sort it out, because it happens fairly rarely.

However, *this* time, W7 refused to boot past a certain point ( the black splash page) and so I did a system restore and this icon thing began to happen. Oddly enough, it *doesn't happen while my cursor is within a text writing area like the one I typing this out in...

Yup: I haven't been proactive about it because it assumes a level of knowledge regarding my system that I just don't have.
