WASHINGTON (AP) - A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may—may not, I hope not—but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."

Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.

Civilian national security force, gun control, "spread the wealth", the fairness doctrine ect.

These things seem to have stirred the wingnuts paranoia. We're even seeing reports of spikes of gun sales. Are we about to see levels of unprecedented paranoia in the country?

As an aside, what would a "Civilian Force" look like?

Considering that the rep is accusing him of being a Marxist, I suppose the implication is that he's advocating Cultural Revolution-esque vigilante groups.

Accusing democrats of being secret communists is a long standing tradition going back to the Russian Revolution. Nothing to see here, move along...

ETA: Although, I'm not sure what Obama was referring to in that speech, as I haven't seen it. Maybe he meant a greater emphasis on contractors?

From Obama's speech:

"Today, AmeriCorps -- our nation's network of local, state, and national service programs -- has 75,000 slots. And I know firsthand the quality of these programs. My wife, Michelle, once left her job at a law firm and at City Hall to be a founding director of an AmeriCorps program in Chicago that trains young people for careers in public service. And these programs invest Americans in their communities and their country. They tap America's greatest resource -- our citizens.

And that's why as president, I will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots and make that increased service a vehicle to meet national goals like providing health care and education, saving our planet and restoring our standing in the world, so that citizens see their efforts connected to a common purpose. People of all ages, stations, and skills will be asked to serve. Because when it comes to the challenges we face, the American people are not the problem -- they are the answer.

So we are going to send -- we're going to send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We'll call on Americans to join an Energy Corps to conduct renewable energy and environmental cleanup projects in their neighborhoods all across the country. We will enlist our veterans to find jobs and support for other vets, to be there for our military families. And we're going to grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered, and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy.

We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Obviously, another twisted version of Obama's words.

For the record, I'm not trying to twist his words or anything. I am an Obama supporter, I just wanted to bring this to attention.

I notice that Broun is also the leader, or possibly sole member, of a crusade against pornography on military bases ... the man's a monster.

Certainly un-American. First they take the porn from the soldiers, then they come after the civilians.

He'll take my porn from my cold, dead hand...

Yes indeed. He proposed the ""Military Honor and Decency Act". Not only is he in favor of censoring what the US military sees and reads he has blatantly misrepresented what Obama said concerning the civilian national security force. In a speech in July Obama talked about a civilian national security force that would be responsible for post war reconstruction such as rebuilding infrastructure. This is an idea endorsed by the current Bush administration and is already in the works, however, the Bush administration calls it the Civilian Corps. Broun fails to mention the Bush indorsement in his fear mongering diatribe. Perhaps Bush is in on the Marxist take over.
Broun is a Southern baptist who wants to protect American troops from those dirty magazines and movies by making it a criminal offense for the troops to buy or view them. This guy has his priorities wrong, he is displaying paranoid tendencies and he is a liar. The Repiblican party would be very smart to distant themselves from this fellow and fast.

Can you provide a source on this?

Remember when Clinton got elected and right wing whackos were shouting about how the black helicopters at ruby ridge were gonna get you? Same deal, different guy.

For that matter, remember that Wolf column at the Huff post shortly before the election where she was talking about the Sarah Palin police state and how it would steal the election?

The right-wing forums are in a paranoid lather over the impending communist takeover of America, or is it a muslim takeover? I'm not sure what their view of Obama is -- muslim terrorist or socio-communist. They can't even wait till the man is president and has proposed some legislation or signed an executive order to start forecasting the end of their gun-totin' world.

I'm more concerned that Obama will prove too willing to continue a good many Bush programs than I am of any commie tinge coloring his administration.

About the ‘Military Honor and Decency Act’

About the speech Obama gave concerning the civilian national security force . He gave it on July 2 in Colorado. To understand what Obama means his words cannot be taken out of context in the way Broun has done. Here's: the speech (26 minutes)

As for Bush endorsing the idea it was mentioned in the article in the OP. Concerning Bush having the civilian corps in the works he addressed this in his state of the union address in January 2007. Here is one link for that: Civilian Corps

As for Bush being in on the Marxist takeover well, I was joking. :)

I am guessing that should cover your request. If not I'll try again. If I got something wrong I'll admit that too.

Yep. Same fear mongering crap. Just as bad as people saying that Bush was going to declare martial law and stop the elections so he could stay in power. Similar garbage spewed by different paranoid people.

On the "tactical" forum I frequent, we have people advising members to buy their new guns before January 20.... That's when Obama will make his move.....

Geez....

Paranoia over Obama? This is laughable. This moronic country voted that jackass GW into office twice apparantly without undue paranoia. Now take a look around kids and see for yourself what George hath rought. Interesting that we'll elect a dufuss like Bush and wanna have a beer with the guy but now that we have a solid thinking intelligent man in the White House there's paranoia? Paranoia over what? Is Barack Obama going to somehow raise the bar and poor Bubba down in his double wide shotgun shack in bunghole Kentucky going to have to stop scratching his kiester and start actually using what's left of his brain? Actually I hope the bar does indeed get raised and "we the people" find intellect fashionable again.

And, here ,folks, you have why it has taken so long for the Democrats to get back into power.
And if this is any indication of widespread thinking among the Democrats they won't stay in power long.
Notice how much this sounds like a mindless right wing rant except for a few name changes?

Someone needs to remind these jerks that living in a republic means compromise and acceptance. I didn't support Obama. What can I say? I'm not a socialist.

All the hype surrounding him is worrying. His campaign built him up to messianic proportions. Some leaders would let that go to their head, but I heard something today on the radio that I really liked about him. Apparently, he declined to meet with world leaders at the G20 conference saying, "The country only has one government and president at a time, and that government is the current administration". Here's an article if you want to read more.

If Obama is conscious of his role as president-elect then I'm sure he'll treat the presidency with care. So, I'll be happy with Obama at the helm even if he takes us in a direction that I don't agree with. It's not his fault. It's what the people want... for now.
