I think at this point she's just trolling John McCain for the lulz.

"C'mon! Enemies who would utterly annihilate America, they would obviously have information on plots. They carry out jihad. Oh, but you can’t offend them. Can’t make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen," Palin said on Saturday during a speech at the National Rifle Association's "Stand And Fight" rally. "Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists."

Nice. It's a helpful reminder of what a bullet we dodged when we elected Obama over a guy who would nominate this horrible woman to take over the country should he die in office.

I'm pretty sure McCain agrees.

That is a disturbing mixture of aggression and religion.

Nothing personal against McCain but I was disappointed he lived through until 2013 (so far). I would have loved to be able to say, "I told you so!"

I can't but help think of a historical parallel. The Nazis were a rather unpleasant bunch; I guess under Palin's doctrine the U.S. would have tortured and gone Gestapo/SS on any Nazi prisoners that happened to have been captured.

Took an ordinary fallacy and made it something unforgettable. Where do I vote for her?

I don't understand this apparent fear that these terrorists could "utterly annihilate" the United States. Put that next to claims of how awesome and strong the U.S. apparently is and those "raghead" and "cave-dweller" type insults and there's a pretty obvious disconnect.

It's as if they believe that America's only claim to strength is going out into the world and punching people in the face.

I read it in the sense of intent or goal, not ability. Like the distinction between "Can I go to the bathroom?" and "May I go to the bathroom?" when you have an irritatingly pedantic English teacher.

That implies no fear, just an acknowledgement of the terrorists' goals.

As for the speech... It's certainly effective rhetoric. She knows her audience. It would be problematic if she were running for public office, but as far as I know she isn't.

Just because McCain is still alive now, doesn´t mean he´d be alive now if he was President, with all the added stress that means.

Her audience being the NRA.

This is probably some mixture of confirmation bias and truth, but: If you are correct that she is playing to her audience and ant it is effective, then what does that say about the NRA? They've moved even further from the responsible organization they once were to crazy extremists.

Crazy drives out sane, this has always been true. I think Heston was the tipping point.

That arguably makes her little speech even worse; if there's no real fear, there's even less reason to "baptize" the enemy like this, except a sort of chest-thumping "we'll show 'em!" attitude.

I think that, at this point, Sarah's just trolling, period. Even she's got to have enough brains to know that this sort of thing forfeits any support for her from the moderate majority of the country who wouldn't even elect a Romney- meaning her actual chances of ever being elected to a meaningful national office is zilch (she could move here to Mississippi and get elected Senator, though). She's just in it for the attention now, and an extreme is the best place for that. She reminds me of a couple of trolls here at JREF (I won't name them, but, interestingly, they share the initials "AL"), who bump threads they've started when they see them dying due to lack of interest.

How is Palin supporting herself these days? She's a FOX News correspondent (her boss Roger Ailes once called her "an idiot" and said he hired her because she got ratings) and she makes personal appearances.

How much did the NRA have to pay her to speak at their gathering? I don't know but I bet she didn't come cheap. Previously she charged about $100,000 per appearance. The further away she gets from the 2008 campaign the less compelling she is as a speaker and presumably her fee has gotten smaller, but she still probably commands a hefty tab.

In exchange she has to be well, entertaining. In fact I would argue that is essentially what she has become. An entertainer, Tea Party style!
