From a BBC report from today (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4630457.stm )

A fault in an undersea cable has crippled many of Pakistan's internet and mobile phone links overseas.

The fault occurred late on Monday and systems are still down. One internet official said it could take two weeks to repair.

The fault has been traced to a point in the Arabian Sea 35km (21 miles) south of Karachi and technicians from Dubai are travelling to make repairs.

Pakistan has more than 10 million internet users.

Here's the big chance for Dr. MAS to show his mettle. I can just see the headlines:

Dr. MAS applies homeopathic remedy (Arnica 20C) to fix fault in undersea cable. Awarded lifetime membership of the Pakistan Mickey Mouse Appreciation Society. ;)

Clearly those New Zealand rats have evolved some impressive underwater abilities to be able to take this cable out as well!

I'm amazed that a problem with one cable could bring down the Internet in all of Pakistan. I would have thought there'd be multiple redundancies built in.

And 10 M Internet users in Pakistan...I think their population is 160 M or so...so about 6-7% of people in Pakistan use the Internet. Hmmm...that sounded kinda low at first but then again I guess I have to remember that there are big masses of poor people in Pakistan that can't afford more basic things than the Internet.
