OS X Leopard Due Oct 26th

How excited is everybody? I'm expecting it to be useful, but non-essential.

I'll wait and see. I can't say I was 85 quid's worth of moved by the list of features.

I realise we were never promised anything particularly amazing in Leopard, but I wonder whether this will come to be seen as a mis-step by Apple, given the opportunity presented by Microsoft's perceived failure with Vista.

Yes, that's the sort of thing I was thinking about. Could Leopard be a missed opportunity to do something blinding that Vista couldn't do, instead of refining and improving what went before without making a great leap forward? Time will tell I guess, but I've seen nothing so far which justified Apple stopping talking about Leopard for fear of Microsoft pinching its features for Vista.

Leopard seems pretty nice to me, the 3D dock looks slick, time machine is pretty cool, etc. I believe the latest ADC download is basically the release candidate, so should be representative.

Have you got your hands on that one?

I pre-ordered it this morning and then...this afternoon's mail included the property tax bill and the earthquake insurance bill. So I canceled my pre-order. :( Ah, well. It will be around and OS X is nice and stable.

I already told them at my local Apple store that once 10.5.1 is released, I'll be there. I'm very interested to see how Time Machine works, although I'll be tempted to say "time machine" in a Doctor Evil-sort of way. It's been my experience that are not only the odd-number releases more impressive than the even-numbered ones, and that it's best to wait until Apple releases the first revision via the Software Update rather than just getting the one out of the box.

Was version 10.8.2.x.y.z really that bad that you have to applaud it's demise?

I'll hold off on upgrading my G5 til my other softwares are compatible. *le sigh* Too much junk to keep current and compatible.

And I'm contemplating buying a new Mac for work...and wondering if I should stall or not for the new system.
(you can see some of why I'm dithering in the "video editing" thread. I need to do more cool stuff, so have a reason to make them buy me a real computer, and refuse a Dell. :) )

Same here... does anyone know? If the dept is gonna buy me a new computer, does it make any sense to wait a few days until the 26th? If I order on the 27th, can they still give me the obsolete OS?

Mac OS X v10.5 Up-To-Date Program

...plus taxes, since they have an Apple store in every state, they have to charge sales tax. I paid $10.65 (7% FL tax).

And Apple tries to ship every computer with Leopard, though I'm not sure if this means pre-installed or packed with disc.

I also seem to recall that His Steve-ness promised to give you Leopard for free if you buy after the 26th and Leopard's not in the package, but I don't have the linky anymore.

Is it worthwhile upgrading to the latest OSX service pack?

I have a Mac Mini - first generation (one using the far, far superior powerpc CPU not a crappy and terrible Intel processor... ;) ) and Apple are staring to bombard me with advertising for their latest OSX service pack ("Leopard").

Anyone got any thoughts on if it is worthwhile upgrade for an old Mac Mini?
