• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

I can't watch youtube videos anymore because they decided to update their flash thingie. Welllll how cute of them. And they even left a link to download it. Yay. Well, it doesn't work! Yes, of course I clicked on the link they provide. I did so many times. And it took me to this portuguese website. I thought "great, that's what I could use now: a worm from a non reliable page". But either way I downloaded it. I ran the program and as I would expect, it gave me an error. I did this about twice and it didn't give me the error the other times but I still can't view the videos at youtube. Today I downloaded it again. It gave no error. I restarted the computer after that and nothing. I can't view the damn videos.

Are you ready for the biggest most miserable irony of it all?:

I was about to post a picture here, with the installation details, which I was going to upload on my myspace page so I could link the image here and as I was going to upload the picture, I got the same message: That I need to upload flash player.

Anyway, here are the installation details transrcibed by hand from the image (Gosh!!!):

Extract: NPSWF32.dll... 100%
Extract: NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe... 100%
Extract: flashplayer.xpt... 100%
Created uninstaller: C:/WINDOWS/system32/Macromed/Flash/uninstall_pl...
Registering: C:/WINDOWS/system32/Macromed/Flash/NPSWF32.dll
Completed

I've done it like 5 times and I still can't see videos. I thought it was already suspicious that the page it links to is in portuguese.

Anyone got a reliable link or a tip on what I might be doing wrong?

It may be a problem with the way FF handles the Flash plugin. This page may be of help.
I have to say that I've never had any problems with Flash, and I use Firefox.

Thank you. I clicked on the link to check which Java version I have and I do have version 9,0,124,0 installed; so obviously I'm having the same problem this person had. But I find his/her writing quite confusing as I didn't get a set of recommended steps to follow in this case.

Also, I went back to try and load a youtube video and I got the same error again, but this time I paid attention at the whole message: It says I either got Javascript turned off or I'm using an old version of flash. So maybe it's the Java, but how do I turn it on?

But unfortunately, as I would expect, that's not the reason either cause I just tried logging on to the chatroom of www.skepticsrock.com and it worked, so my Java is running.

ALSO:

I have tried loading youtube videos from Safari Explorer and it won't either.

Is this confussing enough for you?
No? Ok, here's the latest one:

On this page: http://www.cnet.com/8301-13554_1-9858449-33.html I can see the animated ad on the right side (on firefox) which is a Flash type of Ad.

Do you also use the Noscript or Adblock extensions (or something similar)? Either one of those can block Flash from working properly.

I don't know what Noscript or Adblock is so I don't know if I use it.

Is there a way to find out?

JavaScript does not equal Java. Barely related, in fact.

ETA: oh, and it's likely Flash that you have version 9.0.124.0 of (which is the latest version). Java (which is not necessary for YouTube) is currently at version 6.0_5, if I remember correctly. It does sound likely to be a JavaScript problem you have.

Within Firefox, go to Tools/Add-Ons. That will list any add-ons you have (including NoScript and Adblock). If neither of those are there, try going to http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ to test your Flash player. That will ensure that your browser is indeed using the latest version. If you don't have Shockwave installed, you can ignore the prompt to install it unless you want it. When the Flash confirmation appears, hover over 'About' and it will tell you which version it's using.

If you're not using any weird Add-ons, and you have the latest Flash, I'd put my money on either your having certain scripting switched off within Firefox, or some other security software borking things. Can you name any security software you're using? Anti-virus, software firewalls, and that sort of thing?

Jesus Christ I can't get one thing right. Ok, first problem: My firefox is in spanish, so I don't know what would "ad on" be in spanish. The list in the "tools" window in spanish (translated by myself to english) is: Web search, Read Mail, New Message, Downloads, Extensions, Subjects, Javascript Console, Page Information, Options.

Second of all, I went to the link you gave me and it showed the flash animation. Below it says "you need the latest flash blablabla" and a link. I clicked on it and surprise, it took me to the same stupid portuguese page. Why don't they have like a contact e-mail tech support address or something so I can write them in big clear bolded letters "KNOCK KNOCK! HELLO??? YOUR STUPID FLASH DOWNLOAD ISN'T WORKING! ANYBODY HOME????" ............. ok I know I'm clearly loosing my patience at this point and I'm getting irrational, but this is all frustrating to the bone

My security softwares are: AVG Antispyware and Avast Antivirus.

Ron Tomkins, have you forgotten that this is a Skeptics forum? Why should anyone believe you? Please provide evidence to back up this convoluted story of yours.
etc..etc..

I've come across some sites whose media won't work with my Netscape Navigator, usually I open them in Internet Explorer instead, and they work ok. Maybe you don't like IE, I heard it has security problems, but unless you're watching Youtube for a long time each day I'd just open IE for it.

Ok, friendly reminder to all my friendly friends: I have already tried uploading youtube videos using Safari Explorer and it doesn't work either. Please provide theories and suggestions that are consistent with this fact. Thank you. :)

Right, Add-ons is the supercategory consisting of extensions and themes. But it is indeed extensions that you'd be looking for. If you've never looked there before, it's not unlikely that you'll have none installed. But as you've said that YouTube doesn't work with other browsers, then we can ignore that anyway.

That said, Safari works with the same version of plugins as Firefox, as far as I know, so it could still be the Flash plugin. Try downloading it here: http://www.rattusmaximus.co.uk/install_flash_player.exe and be sure to install it while Firefox is not running. Make sure that the Firefox process has quit first, by looking in the processes list in Task Manager (ctrl+alt+delete). This install is for all languages, so Spanish shouldn't be a problem. After this, revisit the site linked above and see whether it still prompts you for the latest version (and again, you can ignore prompts for Shockwave, as it's not needed for YouTube).

If there are still problems, it's probably down to an AVG or Avast problem, but I have little knowledge of the former and none of the latter.

FYI: I just upgraded one of my Windows boxes from IE6 to IE7, and the same thing happened to me! I can't view YouTube videos on their site, even after downloading the latest Flash player repeatedly.

Embedded YouTubes such as the ones on this site, work fine.

I do use non-standard security settings, Javascript is disabled by default and only enabled on a site-by-site basis. I'm betting that has something to do with it, but I've fiddled with settings to no avail.

ETA: I figured it out!

YouTube moved one of their JavaScripts to a server that is not in the YouTube.com domain. So if you are configuring security on a site-by-site basis, you need to add this other domain to your "trusted" list.

That domain is:

*.YTIMG.COM

I added that to my IE "Trusted Sites" and the problem disappeared.

Wait wait wait wait hold on.... ok.... so where do I add .ytmg.com to my trusted sites? This sounds like the key to it all.

(Today I turned the computer on and received a message that saiys "upgrade shockwave. Click here" and I did. It took me here http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/triggerpages_mmcom/default.html) apparently it installed it but now it's too late and I gotta leave. I will check again later)

I'm not a FireFox user, I don't know how it handles trusted sites. In IE you double click the icon in the lower right of the status bar that says "Internet" or "Trusted Sites" or "Restricted". Then, in the dialog that appears, select Trusted Sites and click the Sites button. It's obvious from there.

In FireFox it might not be "trusted sites" instead it might be the other way around. For instance, if you are blocking ads or animations, often that works on a site-by-site basis. In that case you might need to remove the ytimg.com domain from that list.

By any chance do you have a Firefox plugin called "No Script" installed?

I have no idea... but I guess I do. But I sure as hell didn't install it myself.

If so, you need to tell it to allow scripting on YTIMG.COM. Note there's a T in there.

Great. Now I just need to find out how.:)

Hmmm... well, the thread certainly helped me to realize that there's a bunch of people going through the same hell that I am... but I didn't find any answers or steps to follow to solve the problem.
