There is much disagreement on nuclear power. In Germany it's a stiff "nein danke", while in France it's "Oui, d'accord". Here in insular Europe it's a "Let's form a commitee and talk about it".

What are the pros and cons in terms of environmental risk and energy price?

Nuclear power makes for kick-ass submarines and aircraft carriers. Expensive, but more environmentally friendly.

In the UK it seems that we only have enough gas stored for 11 days (as compared to some mainland European countries that have 55 days storage [from memory]). We are very low on gas supply and are topped up from mainland Europe.

A large proportion of our electricity is provided by mainland Europe (France??).

Forecast is for a severe winter. Perhaps when most of UK industry is shut down from lack of gas (of course mainland European countries will supply the UK before their own domestic needs). Nuclear power seems a good idea.

We could develop a large area of useless land (I suggest Liverpool) and turn it over to nuclear power stations.

:D

I see the poll takes me to "What is a chicken hawk".
A big thank you to the administrators for what must be the most fascinating and surprising poll system on the Internet.

Nuclear power is the only way any western country is going to come close to meeting the Kyoto emission limits, so it's going to happen regardless. Anyone who worries about nuclear waste over the waste produced by coal-fired power stations needs to do some research.

That's easily rectified, so to speak. You still have beans for breakfast and lunch, don't you?

Any method to create usable energy is bad for the environment.

The three biggest electrical generation methods are hyro, nuclear and fossil fuel. I do not think geothermal, solar or wind are ready for prime time yet. I prefer nuclear waste to the CO2 from fossil fuels or the damage from dams.

I also think that conservation via higher taxes (and lowering payroll taxes) is the best plan.

I can't post links yet, but I saw an article recently about the Altamont Pass wind farm in California and how environmentalists are getting it shut down. Too many birds migrate through that corridor and are splatting on the turbines.
And I agree about hydro dams. Here in Washington we see their drawbacks clearly.

It seems like solar power is a favorite for environmentalists, but I'm not sure how practical it is. It would take so much acreage to generate much power - surely that would affect someone's habitat.

I'm not a smarty-pants on this issue by a long shot, but it is my understanding that nuclear power in these modern days is very safe. The disposal problem is still there, but the plants are very safe. We have some old, unused nuclear plants in my state...I wonder if they can be updated?

Most environmental damage at Hunterston is the result of the deep water offloading facilities for imported coal. This was required for two reasons-
to supply the Scottish Steel Industry (Peace be upon it) and to fuel generating stations.
Since we have survived Dounreay and it's varied operations (legal and illegal) all these years, I think I can live with a few more nukes. Safer than the ones stored under Glen Douglas I suspect.

Who cares. I'm talking about the view from Millport bay.

I want to press the button when they blow up the Inverkip chimney too. Except I heard they sold it to the Arabs or something. ???

Rolfe.

Beinz Meinz Fartz. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, supper and dinner and as a snack in between.

It might work but would mean we have to keep Liverpool.

They sold the button to the Arabs?
