With Cameron carrying out his best Michael Corleone impression and eliminating his rivals during a celebration, who will be the next Labour leader?

The early frontrunner Burnham would probably be popular with those who want a 'story' for their leader. Working class, fairly likeable, he'd solidify the heartlands but I can't see him expanding beyond them.

Personally speaking, I think Chuka would could be a risk, but probably the best candidate for Labour to win in 2020.

Cons:
He's 36, a very metropolitan, very middle class latte drinking Londoner who I can't really see relating to some greasy spoon cafe owner in Middlesborough.

Pros:
See Blair. Chuka would stand a better shot at winning the south west seats that Labour need. That is all Labour need for a majority, with their English heartlands seemingly remaining heartlands no matter what. He'd probably get almost all of London for Labour too.

I'd say that - like Miliband Jnr - Chuka would win the party but lose the unions, with Burham doing well enough in both to scoop the prize (Unless this system has changed now).

Labor's real problem is that it seems as though if they win one group they need to win they alienate another.

Keith Vaz!!!! You jest. Surely no-one has him in mind?

Can't you imagine the Vaz Man strolling up to No10 and patronising the police officer?
I wouldn't say that I would personally put a bullet between his eyes*, but I would be beyond dismayed. I have only a mild antipathy towards Labour, but I would certainly object even to his nomination. Just look at his Wikipedia page.

*Why a bullet between the eyes? Surely it would just fall off, unless he squinted really hard.

Dan Jarvis would be my preferred candidate, with Andy Burnham next on my imaginary list.

Keith Vaz!!!! Not unless everybody with a vote has a simultaneous psychotic break.

I've lost interest in politics to the point where I hardly recognise any of the name here.

It can't be David Miliband. The electorate would see it as Ed Miliband episode 2, and he's already been rejected. Keith Vaz - surely that was a joke? As for the others, I'll have to watch and see.

Ah, Keith Vaz, the thinking mans imbecile.

What about David Lammy? He's expressed interest but I think he will get Mayor instead.

I would be happy to have Andy Bunham in charge.

ETA: It alarms me that despite being...well Keith Vaz, he somehow INCREASED his majority? By over 4000? Why do the people of Leicester East hate the rest of the country so?

I think Keith Vaz is our Planet X option, in disguise.

I agree with Peter Mandelson that the distraction of a leadership contest should come later. The 2010 leadership contest needs to be seen as a **** up.

I have voted for Andy Burnham. I would love to see David M return though and have a go - he always impressed me. Can't see how though unless there is a bi-election.

If you'd have asked me before the election I'd have said they'd have won comfortably with David in charge. Now I'm not so sure given the extent of the conservative victory. Id think Chuka if they want to win an election or anyone else if they want to lose another one whilst appealing to their core base.

It won't be David Milliband. I have seen Chuka Umunna a number of times being interviewed by Andrew Neil and I found him far too smooth and unable to directly answer difficult questions. Tristram Hunt is very amiable and would be a good choice. I thought Liz Kendall was very impressive being interviewed today by Andrew Neil. I have heard about Dan Jarvis but don't really know anything about him, though he was talked up by someone this morning on tv. If Andy Burnham is anything like Ed Milliband in terms of political thrust, then I don't think that would resonate well with the U.K. electorate. I would vote for a young, dynamic fresh faced woman: Liz Kendall.

I think they have a lot of work to do first. In a way this thread should be about what they need to change to get elected - not necessarily their core values, but their approach perhaps. I think the best leader will be the person who best represents those new ideas.

Chuka Umunna will give UKIP followers a fit - which is one thing in his favour!

I think you'll find he's straight.

It's funny you say that. My sister contents to this day that she met him in a gay club once when they were both in their 20s.

I picked Chuka Umunna because the name is cool, but isn't he a tad too young?

Chuka Umunna had elevated evasion and failure to answer a simple question to an art form. I don't see him being successful in a leadership bid.
