Dr Phil Show
3:00 – 4:00 PM EDT

"Family Dramas, Mysteries and Facing the Unknown"
Dr. Phil taps into the spiritual world with help from the next generation of psychic mediums, Thomas John and Bill Philipps. When did they first realize they had psychic abilities? And, what messages will they have for guests, viewers, audience members and Dr. Phil staff? Then, recovering addict Kathie says her daughter, Whitney, refuses to forgive her for her past mistakes, and she wants to make amends. Whitney says her mother abandoned the family after Kathie’s mother passed away in 2002, leaving Whitney to fight for — and win — custody of her younger sister. Emotions run high when Kathie and Whitney face each other for the first time in two years on Dr. Phil’s stage. How does Kathie explain her past decisions? And, the women sit down for private readings with Thomas and Bill — what message does Kathie’s mother have from the other side? Can Whitney and Kathie repair their fractured bond? Plus, numerologist Glynis McCants runs the numbers on some of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities. And, Glynis and Thomas visit soon-to-be newlyweds — are they spiritually compatible?

–I get the feeling Dr. Phil is pandering to a segment of society, many who may be in a fragile condition, that could lead to harm for some viewers/believers. I feel Dr. Phil should consider the negative consequences of iatrogenesisWP and do the responsible thing and not air this show with purported "next generation of psychic mediums." Despicable.

Promoting themselves for a show that didn't air yet?!

Thomas John and Bill Philipps appear in online advertising for one of their upcoming presentations that states they were "recently featured on the Dr. Phil Show" –even though that Dr. Phil Show isn't scheduled to air until tomorrow.

I'm posting this about 10:08 PM EDT on Monday, 26 May 2014.
To the best of my knowledge the over the air broadcast of "Family Dramas, Mysteries and Facing the Unknown"
on the Dr. Phil Show isn't due to air until tomorrow, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 at 3:00 PM EDT.

And I thought Chip Coffey had precognitive, clairprescient "psychic medium" abilities to forecast future events with substantial accuracy. :D

Dr. Phil Show, today, May 27, 2014 has "The Next Generation of Psychic Mediums"

Just bumping this thread as a reminder that today, Tuesday, May 27, 2014
3:00 PM EDT
Dr. Phil Show, Family Dramas, Mysteries and Facing the Unknown
with "the next generation of psychic mediums."

Also note that Thomas John and Bill Philipps are being advertised for their own, Mediums at Large tour as "recently featured on the Dr. Phil Show," and "Come see what the Dr. Phil Show calls 'The Next Generation of Psychic Mediums' in a city near you!" –before the Dr. Phil segment was broadcast over the air.

"The Next Generation of Psychic Mediums"

No way can they do 1080p and 60fps.

No definition of what constitutes "The Next Generation of Psychic Mediums"

Might be as simple as they are the result of people who've come before them.

Don't get me started on the "Healthy Skeptics:"
"Two Dr. Phil staffers, Senior V.P. of Legal Cindy Teele and Segment Producer Jesse Green — who admit they're healthy skeptics — receive separate readings from Thomas. Will they become believers?"

I bet the Dr. Phil Show doesn't even prove that there's ever been one psychic medium. So how can there be a "next generation" if you don't have a first generation?

But what are YOU going to do!?

Dr. Phil is a business and the people that can sit around watching afternoon TV love this kind of garbage. You notice programs like NOVA or COSMOS don't air during daytime television. I think it is incredible harmful for the good doctor to tell people they need to take responsibility in their lives and then promote psychic nonsense in the very next breath.

I think that cold reading has become such a well known method used by these frauds there won't be a new generation of these "psychics". Anyone doing the same old John Edwards shtick won't do well. We'll probably see different acts but no one is going to be packing them in at the Indian casinos with a cold reading show.

I'm working from home today, and actually popped it on for a couple of minutes. His producer is a "skeptic" about these things, and agreed to do a reading. You know, for the skeptical side of the argument.

The guy cold-read her about such crazy stuff like her daughter was into skating or gymnastics, that she wants to love and protect her daughter, and that this (obviously 50-something year old woman) might retire in 4 years, and that her daughter might be in a different academic situation in 4 years. Wow. And now she's amazed at how accurate it was.

He did some John Edward-style fast talking.

Jesse Green's (Dr Phil Segment Producer) "psychic" reading

"Psychic medium" Thomas John gave Dr. Phil Segment Producer Jesse Green a "psychic" reading. Promotional material for this segment states that Jesse is a "healthy skeptic." It became apparent to me that Jesse may not have been able to understand cold reading when applied to him.

I'll start with Jesse's complete initial comments after his reading, then breakdown each facet after this paragraph.

Jesse: I was blown away. He was so accurate. I mean he was spot on with every single thing that came to him. He knew my dad’s name was Bill. He knew he wore a beard. He knew he had crazy hair. I have one brother; his name is Sam and he just moved to New York recently. And he knew the first two letters of his name. He knew that we were far away. It was pretty incredible. It’s something I’m going to be thinking about for quite a while.

I hope Jesse reads this and reviews his 'reading,' to understand why the majority of his assertions are false:

Jesse: He knew my dad’s name was Bill. [FALSE]
Thomas: Who’s Bill?
Jesse: Bill’s my dad.

Conclusion: Thomas never said Jesse's dad's name was Bill.

Jesse: He knew he wore a beard. [FALSE]
Thomas: I want to go like this with your dad. (gestures about the chin.) Did he- did he- what is this?
Jesse: He had a beard. He always wore a beard.
Thomas: ‘Cause I want to go like that... (makes longer gesture strokes than after his first statement)

Conclusion: Thomas made ambiguous gestures around his chin area, which I could interpret as the action of one stroking their chin while thinking. Thomas never said Jesse's dad wore a beard.

Jesse: He knew he had crazy hair. [CORRECT- WITH CAVEATS]
Thomas (continuing): ...and crazy hair.

Conclusion: Thomas said the words "crazy hair" and Jesse incorporated those same words later in a sentence as if "crazy hair" was a 'hit.' Thomas never described just what is "crazy hair" as it would've related to Jesse's deceased dad. For example, Thomas never described the hair length, color(s), whether his hair was straight, wavy or curly, or if any patterns were made on the head or face.

Jesse: I have one brother... [FORER EFFECT]
Thomas: Who’s got the birthday in October?
Jesse: My brother.

Conclusion: Thomas never said Jesse had only one brother- Jesse tailored Thomas' statements to fit 'one brother' scenario.

Jesse (continuing): ...his name is Sam... And he knew the first two letters of his name. [FALSE]
Thomas: I see the letter “S.” And then there’s an “A.” Who is that?
Jesse: my brother’s name is Sam.

Conclusion: Thomas never said "Your only brother's first name starts with an 'S' and and the second letter in his first name is an 'A.'" Thomas said he saw an "S"..."and then there's a "A," that's ambiguous- the "S" or "A" weren't specifically stated as being in the first name, they could've just as easily been in a middle, or last, name. Thomas was not descriptive enough.

Jesse: ...and he just moved to New York recently...
Thomas: Is he somewhere else?
Jesse: He’s in New York.

Conclusion: Thomas only asked if Jesse's brother is somewhere else. He didn't know if the brother was elsewhere, and never stated that Jesse's brother is in New York.

Jesse: ....He knew that we were far away. [FORER EFFECT]

Conclusion: Thomas made no mention about Sam living far away. My understanding is that Jesse lives and works in California for the Dr. Phil Show, and his brother Sam moved to New York, and, well, that distance is far away. Jesse made that false leap in his mind.

So I find it disgusting that Jesse Green, Dr. Phil Segment Producer, and "Healthy Skeptic" apparently can't tell what cold reading is. Jesse's additional remarks:

Jesse to Dr. Phil: Spot on, and I’ve seen this kind of stuff on TV before and obviously never experienced it myself so I imagine that it’s clever editing, they fish around a lot before they get to the right answer. That’s the short version. It took about five minutes for him to nail every single thing-didn’t get anything wrong.

Looks like Thomas John used cold reading tactics for Jesse Greens reading.

I watched that segment, and you have described it very well.
Oh boy, I wonder if Dr. Phil and/or his son have something to do with this "second generation" business.
When he is not pimping Doctor on Demand, (how could calling a Doctor you do not know,
or does not know you can help?) then Robin has written another book on how great it is
to be over 50 and perfect. Bleck.

But, I watch.:o

That is so *********** lame that I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Gord_in_Toronto,
Oh yes, it was maddening too.
Since I have learned about cold and hot reading (had no idea before I came here :)),
this was the most obvious, new generation? No, same tricks younger guys.
One of them turned to the audience and said in a general direction,
"Does anyone here know Mike?"
Well, in a room full of Americans (mostly) what is the likelihood that someone in that audience knew someone named Mike?
Infuriating.

ETA
ErnieM, I was at A&E forum when that guy Ryan was running a little fiefdom for awhile. LOL So glad to see someone putting their BS in perspective.
Let the laser light of logic burn that BS into ashes. :)
Chip Coffey is some kinda piece of work. Bleck.

Dr. Phil never defined what "The next generation of psychic mediums" means

Neither Dr. Phil or anyone else during the Dr. Phil "Family Dramas, Mysteries and Facing the Unknown" ever defined what is meant by calling Thomas John and Bill Philipps "The Next Generation of Psychic Mediums."

The only mention in the broadcast was from Dr. Phil:
Dr. Phil: Well, we’re here with Thomas John and Bill Philipps, what I call the next generation of psychic mediums.

This show made no attempt to apply science to test psychic or mediumship abilities. There is no proof anyone can talk with the dead. Yet Dr. Phil has Mr. John and Mr. Philipps on and some people may (wrongly) infer that they have even greater paranormal or supernatural powers than a previous generation (of psychic mediums?) because of Dr. Phil's assertion. And perhaps that will lead to Thomas John and Bill Philipps ability to charge more for their purported abilities because they were on the Dr. Phil Show and Dr. Phil called "the next generation of psychic mediums." What a scam.

Thomas John and Bill Philipps have an upcoming tour called, "Mediums at Large: An Evening with Thomas John and Bill Philipps," in which they use a statement in advertising such as,
Come see what the Dr. Phil Show calls "The Next Generation of Psychic Mediums" in a city near you!

wicked_ways, Thank you for the kind comments about describing the Dr. Phil Jesse Green reading, and about my website.
