We [NYT] should increase our coverage of religion in America and focus on new ways to give it greater attention, such as expanding the Saturday report beyond the religion column.

nyt also increasing coverage of middle america in same article.

More of that liberal bias in the media.
No.
Two reasons:
1. The moral majority minority is Christian and conservative and I’m betting that is what will be most heavily covered.
2. They want to cash in on the religious angle and increase circulation.

I'm not registered so I can't read the article.

I would suggest that people read the article before assuming that Riddick's post is in proper context. It's an 8-page report.

Registering for the NYTimes online is free, and they don't spam you with stuff. I've been registered for 5 years...

Well, the preceeding paragraph states:
Our news coverage needs to embrace unorthodox views and contrarian opinions and to portray lives both more radical and more conservative than those most of us experience. We need to listen carefully to colleagues who are at home in realms that are not familiar to most of us.

I think one could reasonably argue that this is a favorable argument for presenting more atheistic content, since in the US atheism is certainly a contrarian or unorthodox position.

Yep. And the entire report (it's not really an article per se) is specifically addressing how the NYTimes can recover from recent (and guard against future) loss of crediblity.

The whole point of the report is basically require them to provide multi-perspective viewpoints. Hard row to hoe, but not necessarily bad from a skeptical perspective.
