Interesting:

As we continue to learn more about nutrition, the DRIs will continue to change. Science is a work in progress. The IOM has not given us a final answer, but it has offered reasonable science-based interim guidance.

600 IU of Vitamin D = 15 µg (micrograms)

800 IU of Vitamin D = 20 µg

I just attended a conference where one of the main proponents of the idea of higher Vitamin D intake, Dr. Michael Hollick, made a very strong case for increasing Vitamin D. His recommendations and personal regimen are much higher than the new recommendations.

He comes across as a bit wacko, but in actual conversation with him he's actually just passionate. Can't say I'm personally swayed to try his numbers, but it's a fact that Vitamin D deficiency is on the rise.

Food for thought. . .

Reasonably large doses of Vitamin D may help prevent Colds and Flu--or maybe not.

At the recommended dosages {2000 IUs Daily} it shouldn't lead to any real problems.

There is perhaps a noticeable difference between the minimum amount of a Vitamin required to stave off clinical deficiency and what would actually be The Optimum Amount .....

Much harder to determine the optimum.

At least its a coherent argument.
