from: Iraqis Say Council-Approved National Flag Won't Fly - Tuesday, April 27, 2004
BAGHDAD, April 26 -- It was supposed to be the perfect symbol for a new and unified Iraq: an Islamic crescent on a field of pure white, with two blue stripes representing the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and a third yellow stripe to symbolize the country's Kurdish minority.

But the new national flag, presented Monday after an artistic competition sponsored by the Iraqi Governing Council, appears to have met with widespread public disapproval here -- in part because of its design and in part because of the increasing unpopularity of the U.S.-appointed council.

In interviews in several Baghdad neighborhoods, a variety of residents expressed strong negative reactions to the flag, which was reproduced in most daily newspapers. In particular, people objected to the pale blue color of the crescent and stripes, saying it was identical to the dominant color in the flag of Israel, a Jewish state.

Not only do Arabs hate jews, they hate THE COLORS jews use as well. I am not joking.

A blue and white shade has about the same level of cultral sensitivity in Iraq. You know israel is less than popular in the arab world so using the same colours is not hugly sensible. It's not the first time that policts both naternal and international have affacted the colour of flags and doubt it will be the last. To be honest why have a religius symbol on it at all? Unless you want to have a country that is defined by it's relgion it doesn't make much sense.

So why has the British flag got the crosses of St. George, St. Andrew and St. Patrick on it then?

;)

Because back in those days countries were to a degree identifed in terms of relgion.

Because the people behind the design of the flag were very strongly of the opinion that the UK should be a Christian country?

solely based on my sense of art, I think the new flag looks stupid.

symbolically I do like the two blue strips to represent the two rivers.

Wouldn't something like this be more appropriate?

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Whats wrong with the current flag? I assumed it predated Saddam. Except the writing part. Where did I hear that from.

Oh and on somthing semi related to this thread: I recently went to the Holocaust memorial museam in DC. I got to thinking "DAMN! Them A-rabs cant hold a candle to the Euros when it comes to hating the jews!"

Just googled up a flag site for world flags (there are plenty out there, easily found). The flags for most of the countries in the region are either three horizontal stripes, or three horizontal and one vertical (I think one is also a triangle). Saudi Arabia is Green only. I saw nothing in my admittedly quick search that looks anything like that proposed flag anywhere in the world.

And using the blue and white should have given somebody pause. An artistic competition--decision by committee--bah.

How come blue and white are offensive to some Iraqis? Why should it give someone pause? They are just colors, not races, religions or people....colors.... can you spell x-e-n-o-p-h-o-b-i-a? ;)

What I find interesting is that the flag no longer bears the words "God is great".. A lot of Iraqis aren't crazy about that change, especially since it was strongly pushed by the US.

I find it ironic and hypocritical that the US is going through paroxysms of religious patriotism in trying to keep "In God We Trust" on the money and "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, yet they want other countries to remove religious references from their symbols.

Umm..do you NOT see the big fat Islamic crescent moon on the flag? And this flag wasn't design by the US, it was designed by an iraqi.

I agree, the middle east is the most racist and xenophobic place in the world. Must be why our austrailian stooges love muslims so much.

But they took off the actual words that said "Allah akbar", which is a pretty significant statement. And though it wasn't designed by the US, it was approved by the US's handpicked council.
But the overhaul of a national symbol raised some complaints -- particularly since it came from U.S.-appointed leaders.
