Having just finished Half Life 2 - can anyone recommend a good PC game for me to buy next?

I do like FPS games but after HL2, its difficult to see how anything can measure up...

So! Suggestions?

If you like multiplayer FPS, I'm told Battlefield 2 is quite good.

Battlefield 2 if you are playing online.

Far Cry is still great.

F.E.A.R. if your Video card can handle it.

Try a third person game; GTA San Andreas, Max Payne 2, Splinter Cell...

Well I went for FEAR - my card can... handle.. it... urggg...

Blimey, its an aptly named game though isnt it?

As long as you have HL2 (I agree, wonderful game), you might consider some of the mods that have been released. There are a bunch of good single-player jobs available, and a lot more in the works.

Nice list available at:

I've played through Dayhard, Minerva, Mistake of Pythagorus, The Island, and just finished a run-through with the S-Mod.

I was just going to suggest the same. Also some great multiplayer mods. Day of Defeat: Source and Goldeneye: Source are quite fun.

Funny from what I've heard (see: "why PC games suck") it's not very good.

Phooey. Nothing will ever top DOOM.

When I bought HL2 I had never played any of the so-called "shooter" games. Strictly a sim-sort guy, racing, flying, military. Realism and more of it....

But after all the great reviews I gave it a try, and found it to be one of the most immersive and intense games I'd ever played. I know, some don't think much of the Valve/Steam interface, or being logged on in order to play, but I've never had a problem with any of that. If PC games are going to continue to be a part of the market, such measures are going to be the norm. (recent article on Slashdot about software firms trying to re-invigorate the genre)

Terrific visuals and graphics, great voice-acting, good story...What's not to love?
Also, being somewhat older than the average gamer, I found the "somewhat" slower pace to be more fun than the usual high-twitch-factor shooter.

Doom 3 and Quake 4 are certainly options. For excellent gameplay however I'd take a look at Call of Duty or Call of Duty 2. WWII FPS games, pretty realistic, immersive in their own way (the frantic pace of real battle) and also pretty damn hard.

While their different genres of FPS, I'd have to say from a pure gameplay stand point, I enjoyed Call of Duty 2 more than HL2, Doom3 and Quake4. Those German counter-attacks will get your heart thumping :D.

Personally, I've taken a liking to the battle games with a historical or psuedo-historical setting which weaves various old technology/culture/practices.

I first got interested on Return To Castle Wolfenstein, which can be a lot of fun, especially with some of the modifications and missions people have created for it.

It's interesting to think of people having fun by trying to relivethe most horrific and nightmarish moments of their grandfathers' lives. Yeah, for them, it was years of recuring nightmares and the image of their best friend's face as he died of massive blood loss.

But to us...it's a fun passtime.
