In my dating days, it was...

dating
going steady
engaged
married

With 2 daughters I've learned it's way more complex. There is not only an engagement ring, there is a promise ring. What is THAT?

And then there is not just breaking up there is "a break" as in you are NOT broken up, you are just taking a break from going together.

There is a friend with benefits.

What else am I missing?

"Going steady" always sounded funny to me. Just a funny mental image, I guess.

I've got a 13 year old. I just decided that she can wait until she's 20 to date. That seems reasonable to me.

a promise ring is for women to get excited about and show their friends... but men don't have to be bothered with actually buying a diamond and/or actually being engaged.

It sounds like a game of Calvinball, but this time the girls ARE allowed play...

The more immature people are, the more rings and ropes and cuffs they'll be needing. As if these things would stop them from divorcing...

And the more insecure they are, the more they are going to be afraid to break up and decide something is over.

I must say that "hooking up" is great fun and I am glad I grew up in a time where women find it acceptable to have sex without dating.

Sadly, at 31, I missed out on all that fun. Not that it mattered, I was as fat, ugly, and unappealing in my 20s as I am today.

Ok, Kitty, you need to explain all this to me. I have a 15 year old girl and a 13 year old girl, so you have to explain it all. :)

Well, actually, they explain it to me, too :)

I have a 19yo daughter who isn't all that fussed with that whole scene just yet. In fact, her friends use her as a sounding-board and psychologist! I don't think she will ever get all drippy and dreamboatey over some guy, but you never know...

i have to say I skipped getting engaged. We were dating for almost 5 years, and we decided it was time to get married, and that was it. Getting engaged just seemed silly.

What are you going to do if she starts before that? Lock her up?

What about some girl?

Hardly likely, Claus! And she is also quite capable of strangling you too if you get out of line, so don't push your luck!
