Neural programing

There was a guy on Radio Five Live here in the UK last night talking about how he had "cured" 38 out of 40 people of their fear of flying for a TV programme on Channel 4.

The first caller in was a woman named Lucy (or possibly Lisa, it was late/early and I was tired) who kept asking him for any peer-reviewed research that backed up his claims. Something that he was unable to provide.

I hadn't really heard of neural programming before, so I thought this would be a good place to ask for more info and whether there are any studies showing the efficacy of this as a treatment for phobias.

Anyone?

It sounds like you’re referring to neuro-linguistic programming. Having had a friend of a friend lecture me on this over curry one time, I decided to read up on it about six months ago. The Wikipedia article is a fairly messy starting point. Upon searching the literature, I only found dubious papers reporting positive efficacy. By dubious, I mean they were non-peer-reviewed conference proceedings published in ‘management’ journals. However, I have next to no psychology knowledge, and I only checked with Google Scholar.

That was it. Neuro-linguistic programming.

The guy they had on (I can't check the BBC website from work to get names) could provide no answers when asked for a peer-reviewed study and the caller did a great job in not letting him waffle on without giving an answer.

Cheers for the references. They should help me pass a little time.
