Rumors are flying.

I myself have predicted ever since his drunken shooting incident that Cheney will not finish his term, and will resign for "health" reasons. I was thinking it would happen this spring, but now I'm thinking it will be this month, January, so that Bush gets to have Condi standing behind him as he delivers SOTU, rather than deadeye Dick.

There's a downside to this?
Not really. Cheney's retirement and replacement would benefit us all. And it would clear the boards for Bush's impeachment and removal.

Just a casual observation, but Cheney who? :p
He seems to have already had his wings clipped.

This sounds too clever for Bush. Maybe he will move that Harriet Miers lady into the position instead. I hear she is job hunting.

Where? This is the first I've heard of this. Has this been reported anywhere in the mainstream press?
Just blogosphere chatter at this point, and nothing real to grasp hold of. Here's what Al Kamen says in the Washington Post.

But Negroponte is a guy who clearly can't hold a job. This would be his fourth since joining the administration just over five years ago. And the chatter has already begun that he may not be in this one too long before he moves up one level.
So here's a case of MSM reporting, and here he says it's just chatter that Negy would "[move] up one level." So bloggers are starting to think about where Condi might move up to.

hgc, I am mostly with you in the sentiments that you put forth, but not so much in the details.

1. I think Cheney has weathered the shooting fallout. I also suspect he wasn't drunk.

2. Cheney seems to have been the most significant player with respect to Bushco foreign policy. There was a moment when I thought he was out after Rumsfeld was fired, but I don't see any signs of this anymore. Was he cut out of the planning that Bush is supposed to announce this week? Maybe, but from what's been released so far it looks to me like Bush has no intention of abandoning Cheney's ideas that got this whole thing going in the first place.

There was some stuff that got leaked that Cheney was trying to disassociate himself from Bush and the war in Iraq a few weeks back. It seems like mostly people just laughed at it and it didn't go anywhere. Does anybody remember that.
