I just read The Guns of August. Great WWI book covering the leadup to the war, and the first month. I want to know more.

What I'd really like to read is Hew Strachan's 3-volume work on it. But he's only finished the first one as of 2003.

What I'm looking for is something with historical detail about the progress (or lack thereof) on the military side over the years.

I see I can get many books about individual battles, but I'm really looking for an overview first.

Suggestions?

There is always John Keegan's 'The First World War'.

De Groot's 'The First World War' is shorter. I like it, even though his analysis is a bit opinionated sometimes.

The White War is a good overview of the Italian Campaign

1915: The Death of Innocence is a decent read of the Western Front after the Battle of the Marne, but lacks analysis and depth.

Does anyone know of any good English language books on Austro-Hungary's various campaigns? Most of what I'd read up until this year ignored A-H, and the realization that for nearly two years they were managing a 4 theatre war just rather became evident to me (Serbian, Russian/Polish, Romanian, and Italian fronts).

You could try Rauchensteiner's "The First World War and the End of the Habsburg Monarchy". I have not read it, but it gets pretty good reviews.
An issue with the book seems to be a lack of maps, so you might need to source those somewhere else.

The books is available as a free pdf here:

The book is an update of Rauchensteiner's previous (equally well received) book "Der Tod des Doppeladlers" which has not (as far as I know) been translated, though. What is a bit irritating is that this book was actually well supplied with maps.

John Keegan's "The First World War" is the best single volumne history on the topic.
In ficjtion, "All Quiet On The Western Front" by Remakrque and "A Farewell To Arms" by Hemingway are probably the best novels to come out of the war.
I recommend "A Peace To End All Peace" by David Fromkin as a excellent account of the War in the Mid East, and how it directily led to the mess that the Mideast is today.
