Natural amazement

I read sometimes on these forums when woos talk about the amazing and wonderful aspects of their beliefs. Some even scoff at us when we tell them about the amazing and wonderful aspects of science and the natural world. Well, next time a woo should scoff, perhaps some of you may want to show them this:

I got this from a friend of mine and looked it up.

You can find out what the effect is from here:
Mt. St. Helens at Sunrise

Don't let the name of the above link fool you. There is some dispute as to whether it is Mt St Helen or another mountain. My point being the formation itself and what causes it.

We see those here, depending on the time of year. I think they are called lenticular clouds (?).

Has to do with weird weather around high isolated mountain peaks. I'll see if I can get a photo and post one sometime, (although they are more common in wintertime.)

Usually only a single thin 'pancake' cloud formation, but I've seen as many as five layers.

Yes, lenticular clouds. And as a matter of fact, they are often the cause of UFO sightings, as you can see from the example. Don't know that I've ever seen 2 stacked on top of each other like that.

I have seen an number of atmospheric events, to my surprise, I appear to be the only one interested at the moment (for example, going in the traffic and no one else being aware of it).

The one I recall better was two suns! I still dont know what happened, but there were the sunset sun (real sun this is) and another "sun", almost of the same intensity, on another spot in the sky. It was of course somekind of reflex. And it was WAY COOL. :D

"Sundogs"?

Meh. It would've been more amazing if it had been supernatural.

/just kidding. Great picture :D.

Correct but I dispute "often the cause of UFO sightings" - just a minor point of clarification

Lenticular clouds are often used for UFO photos but I contend that the photographer could not possibly be fooled. Lenticular clouds act like clouds and look like clouds (albeit odd ones)

They only look like UFOs on photos where time is at a standstill.

My point is that lenticular clouds are never the cause of UFO sightings but they are often the source of deliberate UFO distortions. The people who take these photos and say that they are some mysterious sighting are hoaxers. They know full well that these are unusual clouds

sundogs

I would like to add that being in a mild climate (Seattle area) I have never seen a sundog until the recent eruption of Mt St Helens which created a sunset with one.

I was fascinated and pointed it out to my teenage son who said

"yeah, whatever"
