It plays music even after I've closed the music playing window. It's a window of the XP variety. I can switch profiles, close browser (firefox), close all windows, and the music persists.

This is embarrassing when the music happens to be of a... background for erotica variety.

It stops when I shut down or restart, but this must be abnormal, no?

Anybody know how I can stop it? It's played a particular REM song for days.

I'll open a website that has music, a game or whatever. The music keeps playing after I've closed the window. The only way to stop the music is restarting. I have no music files, and it's not a cd.

will it keep on forever, or does it stop eventually?

Do you have a seperate sound card or on-board sound (speakers plug in straight to the Motherboard)?

Might be a memory thing.

If the source is a website, then either you are remaining connected to the web page while logging off, which seems improbable, or you have actually downloaded the file to your hard drive or into RAM and it's being played by the browser.
The question is- what application is active when the music is playing? Is it your browser or your music player- for example Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player.
Next time it happens, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, run Task Manager and see if either of these is listed in the processes tab. Right click on anything you suspect and choose End Process. If the music stops, that's the program you need to tweak.

(You appreciate you are being punished by GAWD for looking at sinful websites?)

The music plays after I close the browser, and I rarely run a media player.

I've run the task manager as well, and the music continues even though there's no app running. The only way to stop it is to restart windows. Should I un-and-reinstall Windows?

Yes, I'm a dirty, lustful sinner, and god is punishing me by possessing my Windows. :p Troubleshooting is useless against the almighty.

Ignore the applications list in Task Manager, look at the list of running processes for anything odd. Bear in mind you have to know what should be there already to recognise what is 'odd'.

I had excatly the same problem...

I worked out what it was...I can remember it was a very easy "Why didnt i think of it before" kinda thing...

It was simple to fix...

I'm sure the problem had something to do with the 'Firewall'...( I use ZoneAlarm Pro ) keeping its notification screen up behind the WMP...asking if you want it to connect or being a server and "Remember This Setting"

When i sober up...i'll probably remember...But, thru a drunken haze, i think thats what it was connected to...

Hey...I don't even know what day it is today...let alone what happened a few hours ago...

Thanks...

Goodnight...

You may want to see if there is an updated sound driver for your system.
Also,
Try MSCONFIG from the run command line.
Check the startup tab and see if there is anything that stands out.
You may have to google the application names being started to see if it is okay to prevent them from starting.
If you do find anything suspicious uncheck it and then run with the selective start option.
Just be care you do not blast something you need.

Yes, I'm a dirty, lustful sinner,-Babe from Missouri.

Get round here, NOW!

Well, it's quite a hike actually.
Yes it's the Processes window in task manager you need to check, not applications. There will be a LOT of stuff there. Best to run Task manager once after you switch on the PC, so you have an idea of what is normally active in background. Then do it again when the music plays. You are looking for something that wasn't there before. right click and end the new processes. (If you end enough, sooner or later one of them will shut windows down. Don't sweat it. Just start again.) It may take you a few tries, but you'll find the responsible process eventually. Then you get to remove it.

Failing all of this stuff you could sacrifice a virgin, or maybe there is a homeopathic remedy you could try.

;)

Thanks, guys. I tried several things, and I'm not sure which worked, but now my comp only plays music when it's commanded.:j1:

But, can I do the virgin thing anyway? Is de-flowering considered sacrificing?;)

Well...

My problem of music continually playing after i closed WMP was to do with Zonealarm...

It seems that the Firewall was asking permission to access the net...and even if i closed the player the music would still be playing...

When i denied access in the Zonealarm pop up ...the music stopped...
