Apparently Keith Olbermann donated some money to several (Democratic) political campaigns - which is a breach of MSNBC's ethics policy.

(CNN) - Keith Olbermann, MSNBC's primetime firebrand host, has been suspended indefinitely for violating the ethics policies of his employer earlier this year when he donated to three Democrats seeking federal office, MSNBC announced Friday.
"I became aware of Keith's political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay," MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in a statement.

Linky.

(Somewhere, Cicero is going absolutely nuts.)

See, he just should have done what Hannity does which is to have his favored candidates on so they can ask for money and he can agree with them....

Olbermann is a tool, but this sudden burst of journalistic ethics by MSMBC is meaningless.

But it's still the right thing to do, no?

Um, no. Olbermann has become a buffoon. I think he wanted to become the Rush Limbaugh of the left and now he's over-achieved. He should have just gone for the illegal prescription abuse, after all that is forgivable not matter what one said about it previously.

Well he suffers from his network not being a financial supporter of a given party. Hannity and them do not have to donate to their fav REPs, FOX takes care of that for them.

Thank God, Maybe MSNBC news can chase after some credibility again, between Keith and Rachel I have trouble even switching through the channel. And I'm pretty far from a Reichtard dittohead, but Obermann and Madow are about as close to the left version of O'Reilly, Rush, Beck and Hannity as it comes. It is the distortions and falsehoods that make these people disgusting and repugnant, not the Right/Left perspectives from which they contrive those disingenuities.

I'm gonna step completely out of character and say that I'm with Keith Olbermann on this issue.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Keith is a liberal. No surprise there. But his show isn't "hard news", it's opinion/editorial. MSNBC employed Olbermann to do an opinion show. Olbermann has supposedly been suspended for donating something like 7,000$ to various democratic candidates.

But if we took every minute that Olbermann has spent on air at MSNBC praising democrats, attacking republicans, supporting democratic policies and criticizing republican policies and compared that to how much MSNBC charges per minute of airtime for advertising then Olbermann has already given democratic candidates and the party itself probably millions of dollars of free advertising. And he did so with the full knowledge and consent of his bosses, because this is what they paid him to do.

And now he is in the dog house at MSNBC because a drop in the bucket for the democrats took the scenic route into the party coffers?

As much as I'd like to jump on the conservative schadenfreude bandwagon, this is silly. It doesn't make sense. MSNBC should put him back on the air and give him a raise.

I disagree with their policy, if it applies to pundits. I would have no problem with Hannity donating $2400 to every single REP who ran for congress. I would have no problem with Beck or Maddow doing the same...they are individuals. They should have the same right as every american does to donate to their favorite politician.

I disagree with NEWS ORGANIZATIONS and CORPORATIONS being afforded these same rights.

However, I do agree that if he KNOWINGLY VIOLATED their policy, he should be punished.

Yes, but if I were them, I would turn to Fox, and say "after you" when it comes to trying to regain such credibility through purging the pundits.

As another right leaner, I agree with all of this except the last five words... and man I hate taking Olberman's side SOOOO MUCH.

So they should not have suspended him? What, then?

Why didn't Joe Scarborough get suspended for making donations to Republican candidates in 2006?

Why didn't Joe Scarborough get suspended for making donations to Republican candidates in 2006?

If I'm reading right, MSNBC said it was OK because Scarborough was a commenator and not an anchor. Only thing is that's Olbermann's job too except on election night when the network thrusts him into the anchor position.

If MSNBC fires him, Fox should hire him to do a point/counterpoint show with Glenn Beck. It would make Jersey Shore seem like Masterpiece Theater in comparison. :D

While I understand your perspective, I don't think a "I'll behave ethically and civilly when those who oppose me do," is an adequate or appropriate standard. It's the old two wrongs don't cancel out problem. The high road is narrow and hard.

I am not sure, perhaps he should have, or perhaps the policy was put in place (A) because of that, or (B) after that.

Anyone have any info on this aspect of it?

I agree...it was more of a statement of prophylaxis to BAC, mhaze, and others who might come in here and say "here here".

My jaw tightens up and I tend towards headaches listening to either for more than a minute or so, but,...I'd at least tune in and give such a show a couple of tries just for the spectacle it promises! But none of this sitting around a table crap, I want to see dualling whiteboards, podiums and witness boxes for any guests/experts brought in for supportive commentary/grilling.
