mp3 with cd-player

Hi.

I have a regular cd-player and would like to listen to mp3 files on it. If I write a mp3 file on a cd and put it in the cd player (Sanyo cdp-4940) nothing comes out of it.

The files on the cds that are readable by the cd player are named TrackXX.cda with XX being a number (these files have a size of 1K ??)

Is it possible to write mp3 files on a cd and hear them on a regular cd player ? Do I need a converter ?

If your cd player can't handle mp3 files, then yes, you need to convert.

I.e. there are some recent players that can handle mp3 files, but most older ones cannot. You will need to convert the mp3 files into WAV files.

There are many convertors that can do this. CDEx is one, free, and a good one.

If you use the "Nero Express" CD burning software that comes with most CD/DVD burners, all you have to do is choose "Make Audio CD". Drop the MP3s in place, and they'll be converted automatically. Do not use the "Make MP3 CD" option. If you do, the MP3s are not converted to audio-CD tracks. An "MP3 CD" is simply a CD-Rom with MP3s on it.

You might want to look out for an "MP3/CD" player that can also play the MP3 CDs. By putting the MP3s directly on a CD you can get up to 10 albums on a single disc. Such players are dirt cheap these days.

If you use iTunes, you can burn a CD by making a playlist, putting in a blank CD and clicking the "Burn disk" icon.

Roger and Earthborn pretty much covered everything you need to know (and I'll second the recommendation for CDex--great program. Free and easy to use). I'll just add that many DVD players handle mp3s. If you happen to have a DVD player you might want to check the manual to see if it will play your mp3s.

The "file" information that Windows displays doesn't mean anything--ignore it. CDA is a raw data format and is not recognized by Windows.

Now that was a great thing to learn. For me it was, I have purchased some tunes, but then wondered how to get them off itunes. Nothing like being dumb after the purchasing.
