WASHINGTON - The Bush administration said Wednesday it would seek to reinstate an indictment against a California pornography company that was charged with violating federal obscenity laws. It was Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' first public decision on a legal matter.

Billed as the government's first big obscenity case in a decade, the 10-count indictment against Extreme Associates Inc. and its owners, Robert Zicari, and his wife, Janet Romano, both of Northridge, Calif., was dismissed last month by U.S. District Judge Gary Lancaster of Pittsburgh.

Screw free-speech, and while we're at it, screw double jeopardy.

Perhaps the Bush admin should look into banning the bible. It has many violent passages as well as minority suppression, abuse of women, and it questions authroity (treasonous?).

I'm glad that the nation is devoting time, money, and energy to fighting the evils of pornography rather than dealing with frivolities like capturing Osama bin Laden or working out affordable healthcare.

I'd certainly prefer to be blown up on my way to the cancer ward than face the trauma of being able to purchase adult movies.

Don't forget promotion of slavery and anti-family issues like polygamy, incest, and infanticide.

You know, you people are taking this way out of context.

The material involved depicts scenes of violent rape and sexual murder.

So, err....... NOTHING AT ALL LIKE THE BIBLE!

Thank goodness they are just going after rape and snuff films. Vivid doesn't make that crap.

It's for the children! We have to protect the children who's parents let them watch porn!

Parents are not responsible enough to protect their children. I am more concerned with comercials they show on cartoon stations.

Hmmm...

Just on the off-chance you are NOT being sarcastic here:
Actually very much like the Bible.
Just read some Samuel, Judges etc.

Also, I believe people should be able to decide for THEMSELVES if they want to see scenes of violent rape and murder. If you want to draw an artificial line, you'd have to shut half of Hollywood down - and you'd be sad if there were not Splatter- or Zombie-movies anymore, now wouldn't you ;)?

I know I'm new, but I think you guys are missing the point. Free speech is VITAL to critical thinking. ALL censorship laws are based on Judeo-Christian religious "values". Controlling what people see and read is one of the ways you control what people think, because we do tend to think in language. The moment you ban one word, you create a slippery slope to banning whatever you don't agree with. Especially when you have a leader that invokes a spooky father figure in every speech he's made. We have a society in which, if you lose control of your anger, they will send you to anger management courses. In these courses, they teach you that the anger is internal. No one can "make you angry", you get angry. The anger is subjective in an individual person. Yet, we cannot make the leap to understanding that no one can offend you, you take offense. Offense and obcenity are also personal, subjective emotions. The distinction between these two, as far as I can tell, is that the latter is based on superstition. When religion becomes state, dissenters become heretics. That's us, folks. I think that the attack on the Bill of Rights is one of the greatest threats to critical thinking.

Sorry if this ran on, but it's been bothering me for a while.

I agree with most of your rant but not all censorship laws are religiously based.

In tyrannical countries, the most important part of censorship is to stifle dissent. In the US, there is little effort to actually censor dissent but much pressure is put upon dissenters by claiming that they are anti-American or pro-terrorist. The Bush administration and rightwing politicians use this frequently.

There are also attempts to stifle offensive speech that have nothing to do with religious values - e.g. flag burning and so-called hate speech. The censorship of offensive speech actually seems to be attempted more by left wingers than right wingers. The PC nonsense that premeates some universities are the most notable examples.

Yep. You're right. I overgeneralized. *giving self 40 lashes with wet noodle*

That being said, I'm not sure the PC movement isn't based on similar superstitions.

While we do think in language and, to some degree, the change in language can have an effect on thought process, the PC movement seems bent on banning certain words in order to replace them with something more innocuous. First, you say certain words must not be said, 'Don't say THAT, say this word (or, more likely, phrase) instead'. The problem is that you change connotation with wording. You bury social problems underneath jargon, hoping that the problem will go away. I equate this with closing your eyes and wishing the boogyman away. It works on the imaginary, but on real social issues, it's irresponsible. It's like saying "If I pray to god, he will isten and this horrible thing will work itself out." instead of actually doing anything about the problem. Maybe I just confused my superstitions....

As for right wing/left wing, I can't say I've ever paid much attention.

You don't cherish speech. You're worried jerk-off material will be unavailable someday.

Go back under the rock you came from. If that's the most intelligent thing you have to say, I do pity you. Don't bother to reply, I'm not going to bother with you anymore.

My reply wasn't addressed to you, but considering your mistaken attention toward me, I now redirect the insult specifically to you alone.

Extreme makes a bunch of sick ****. It's not just simulated rape/snuff filsm but scat and vomit themes. But if you set the precendent that you can ban stuff because you find it offensive, Where do you draw the line?

It's nbot like they're tying people up and making them watch Ass Clowns 6 or something.
