Moon Halo

Spectacular. Thanks for sharing. With any luck, you can get away from city lights and take all of the night sky in.

Nuts! Guess I'll have to make do with the APOD pic - thick clouds from horizon to horizon, can't even locate a hint of where the Moon might be. But thanks anyway for the heads up. :)

Wish I had a decent camera and could have got a picture last night. Didn't have time to spend on this last night, as it was about time for me to get ready for work when I posted the OP. But this morning I looked around the web a bit more, trying to find a better picture, one that more closely matched what I saw. None of the pictures I've found really show a sky as clear as we had here last night.

One a second look, on the way to the car for work, I could see a very light haze in the sky. But there were no visible clouds that I could find, and the stars were only very slightly less bright than on a completely clear night (as far as my perception could tell anyway ;)).

Anyway, it was pretty. Got a few folks at work to see it, though there are more street lights to deal with there, they could still make it out.

Nature is just so neat :)

Speaking of the Moon,... it reminds when I got my new camcorder a few years back. One of my first targets for the zoom function was a very pretty, dulled orange Moon. As I zoomed in slowly while trying to keep the focus under control, a bat flew straight across the Moon, did a loop-de-loop and flew back across  - just like in one of those scary Halloween movies! I wasn't intending to capture the bat in front of the moon at all - I wasn't even thinking about bats. Beginner's luck I suppose - but cool as hell! :D

Halos are always a treat. I've been eagerly awaiting the opportunity for another to appear so I can improve upon my photographic attempts (see below). The last few I've seen didn't last long due to encroaching clouds or similar annoyances.

If you really want to push the geek envelope in terms of atmospheric optics, there's a halo simulator available. :D

I have seen moon halos and also moon rainbows with very faint rainbow colors.

Oh, Gory Be! There is an absolutely fantastic halo around the moon right now. It's still only about 45 degrees from the horizon and in the middle of some light haze as opposed to the clear skies elsewhere. The Moon looks like it is embedded in softly glowing cotton with a definite rainbow effect circling that, and then a circle of dimmer blue-green between that and the rest of the sky!

Gorgeous - I'm gonna try to get some pictures!
:wave1

Darn,... no such luck. By the time I got through calling some friends with cameras, it was gone.

Someone needs to contact a new-age shop and ask what it means when you are able to see the moon's aura.
