I was just checking this website that offers moon for sale!
http://www.lunarregistry.com/
I'm preaty sure that a lot of you already seen it. Plus there are other dozen of website that claim that they are the only ones who can sell it.
Some say that they authorized by "Luner Comunity" other say that they are only Moon Realestate agent authorized to sell moon.
I have few friends that actualy bought an acre or two on the moon... I just lough at them and tell them that they've been sucked in... but may be I am wrong and they realy buy land on moon (even though I still think it's useless).

Does anyone has some proper information about this matter.
I won't be buying moon land anyways but I just wanna know if it is complete bull$h1t or has some sense in it.

Thank you

Hi badnews & welcome.

Well, from their own site comes this answer:
Q: Can any State claim a part of outer space as its own?

A: No. The Outer Space Treaty states that outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means. The Treaty establishes the exploration and use of outer space as the "province of all mankind." The Moon Agreement expands on these provisions by stating that neither the surface nor the subsurface of the Moon, nor any part thereof, or natural resources in place, shall become property of any State, international intergovernmental or non-governmental organization, national organization or non-governmental entity or of any natural person.

Clear enough. No you can't own things in outer space. Of course then they go right on and sell you some moon.

...The Lunar Republic Society, a publicly registered International Business Company, offers land claims to selected properties on the Moon in compliance with the Lunar Settlement Initiative, under which at least 95% of all funds raised must go directly to support a privatized program for settlement and development of the Moon. We don't claim to own the Moon; no nation or government owns the land within its borders. Instead, laws and treaties are created that allow for the orderly distribution of property. We are offering a legal means for private citizens and commercial enterprises to purchase Lunar real estate, along with a realistic program for the eventual settlement and development of that property.

We are contributing to the goal of returning humans to the Moon on a daily basis. We are proud of the work we are doing and of the achievements we have had so far. The Society has developed the most comprehensive interactive atlas of the Moon ever released to the public (www.fullmoonatlas.com); successfully advocated the removal of a crater designated for a Nazi war criminal; provides financial and administrative resources to organizations that are helping us to reach our goals; annually provides scholarship opportunities to students seeking advanced education in aerospace-related fields; and, in Fall 2003, launched the largest in-classroom Lunar education program ever undertaken for elementary-school students. Focused on getting youngsters interested in space exploration and the Universe around us, this program will culminate with a competition that will send the winner of a nationwide essay contest to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama (USA).

So what you get is a cool photo of what you 'own', they say they'll donate 95% of what you sent to a variety of space exploration/development causes.

Seems harmless enough. You could frame it and set it next to that chunk of the London Bridge from Arizona.

in other words... they tell us they can't sell it... but they still do... and people buy....

I guess the only sensible thing is to start selling it too...

Another point of view is that, if you can defend a piece of territory, it's yours. That's really what land ownership comes down to ultimately. It helps if you have a country with laws which will be on your side, but hey, you can do it on your own, you just have to be able to take all comers, including governments; in the case of land on the Moon, Bruce Willis in an armored lunar rover.

Supposedly, because I was born on the last day of June, the moon is my ruling planet. I howl at it during the night.

You'd look silly howling at it during the day.

Eh, why not get the cool pic from NASA (you paid for it) and donate 100%?

That's assuming that I abide by that little treaty of theirs. Funny, I don't remember voting on that.

The RUSH IS ON, BOYS! First person their can stake their claim! Me, I'm thinking of settin' up a big ol' ranch ... a few a dem moon-bugs, maybe some prospectin' ...

Seriously, though. Treaties like that will be broken when someone goes to the moon and has a good enough reason not to abide by it. After all, who's going to kick them off the moon?

That's assuming, of course, that they are self-sufficient. The threat of being cut off from Earth, or from supplies or whatever would be a pretty strong incentive to obey the "law."

Good thing I saw this thread. I'm in need of some cash and have to unload Iapetus at a rock-bottom price!

Only US$100,00! What a bargain! Get it now before I put it on eBay! :D

Treaties are sort of a temporary thing anyway, they let us all focus on other things for the time being. Otherwise we might be engaged in a race to plant little flags all over the solar system.

There will be plenty of time to conquer the universe later.

This may contain an insight into the psyche of shallow people that want everything they see, but like, who cares?

these moon sellers, like the people who sell stars so that you can have your name assigned to them, are not recognised by any one except themselves as having this right.

I always hear ads on the radio from the "Star Registry" or something similar. Sounds like kind of the same deal - except they name a star after you. Of course it is only named after you in the big book of star names they keep on file and on the certificate they send you.

I don't think astronomers look up and say, 'oh look, Jeff is rising in the east!'
