Mind control symbolism?

I consider myself a rational thinker and an atheist, but it's somewhat easy for conspiracy theories that I can't completely debunk by material I find to mess my head up and cause irrational fear in me. I know I should propably seek a therapist about my problem, but I decided to post here in case someone could help me out with this.

Basically, the crank website Vigilant Citizen, the guy who finds evil Illuminati everywhere has got the idea that every single female artist in the music industry is a mind controlled sex slave. The claim is outrageous and ridiculous, considering the existence of Illuminati mind control "Project Monarch" he continuously refers to has not even been proven, and seems to exist only in the minds of conspiracy theory authors such as Fritz Springmeier. However, VC claims that since things what are apparently associated with mind control in books such as Springmeiers are depicted in modern day popular music means that MC is indeed real and still prevalent today.

The things VC claims to represent mind control are for example butterflies, mirrors and multiple personalities. Since Britney Spears possibly has Dissociative Identity Disorder, she is of course claimed to be a mind control victim since the CT authors claim DID is caused by Monarch programming. Right. Spears' new music video "Scream and Shout" features will.i.am selecting different butterflies from a menu, VC interprets him as the "Handler" of Britney, choosing the identity to be used from her dissociated identities. Of course, the video having a "multiplity theme" with several dancing Britneys also refers to the multiple personalities caused by mind control.

VC claims to find similar symbolism in other music videos too, and the website is full of similar analyses. This stuff bothers me only because it can't be similarly debunked as other conspiracy theories such as 9/11, as it depends on an interpretation of a music video. The entire point of VC, finding "evil occult symbolism of the Illuminati to control yo thoughts" of course depends on the assumption that symbols itself have some sort of spiritual or subliminal power which we know isn't true, but this Monarch programming thing has me confused.

Britney Spears has always caused irrational fear in me. I always thought it was due to her appalling lack of any discernible talent.

Now I know otherwise.

This is an example of someone having just enough of the truth to be really stupid.

The fact is, certain symbols do resonate with human psychology and/or culture (for most people, anyways), and that's why artists use those symbols. It is "mind control", in so far as a picture of a cute baby or kitten will make most people go "Awww!", and a picture of a steaming pile of **** will make most people gag.

Most symbols aren't that obvious, of course, and it's the subtle ones that make for the best art, and as such are used by the best artists. What kind of subtle things? Things like, pictures of eyes make people act more honestly.

So, he has just the smallest grain of truth here, and then, like any good CTist, runs absolutely rampant with it, completely missing the real point.

Hi Rakarek, I have a stepson who has showed me those same youtube videos and conjectures about artists.

The world is full of things that may be interpreted as symbols. The only way to know whether they really mean something is evidence from someone that shows they did it intentionally.

It's like Jesus in the Grilled Cheese sandwich. You can always keep seeing Jesus there, or you can think that a random pattern or act, or maybe even a con artist, all put it there.

Well yeah, I despise the "Look! It's a triangle in the music video! That must mean the artist is Illuminati!", though I wouldn't be surprised if Aleister Crowley and his philosophy was popular amongst celebrities, considering his writings promote embracing sexuality and expressing yourself like you want to. Don't see any sinister about that though.

The only thing I've been bothered about is the fact what we've seen happen with Britney Spears and her mental state and breakdown oddly correlates in some things the CT authors have wrote about mind control subjects, and the butterflies & "multiple Britneys" theme in some of her newer videos seem to promote that belief. I'm trying to keep in my mind though that correlation =/= causation.

Well, there's at least two things to consider about this.

One, some celebrities do just go *********** crazy. Mental problems don't respect popularity, and with the number of people out there performing, we should expect at least some of them to develop such problems, just as a statistical likelihood. And when such a person does go nuts, the CT nutbags will inevitably latch onto them as "proof" that their pet theory is correct.

Two, these celebrities are part of the same culture you and I are a part of, which culture also includes the CTists. You need to consider that the artist is putting on an act, part of which might be playing to the symbolism of the CT, which is part of our common cultural heritage.

As much as it pisses us off here at the JREF forum, CTs are a part of our culture, and have been for a long, long time. TV shows like the X-Files wouldn't be nearly so popular if CTs weren't a long standing part of our culture. And like any other part of a culture, they are available for use by artists who are trying to evoke a certain "feeling" in their work.

Before you accept any actual CTist's claim that the activities of a particular artist "proves" their CT, you need to ask if either of these options could also explain their activities.

Yeah, that's a plausible explanation for the "Illuminati symbolism!!!!111oneoneone" screams, but then again are these "Project Monarch"-things really mainstream conspiracy theorism? Propably this all is just seeing patterns where there are none, can't find any better rational explanation.

Secret Societies are a societal grease trap for the incompetent. They can't help it that they suck at keeping secrets.

Even so, we wouldn't notice all the mistakes but for the vigilance of the interwebs.
