Michael Moore: Best Picture?

I suppose winning an Oscar makes a difference when the movie is made into a video and how much shelf space it gets at Blockbuster. But since the lag time between movie and DVD is getting shorter all the time, does it really matter any more? And isn't F911 out on video already?

There's always the DVD to TV lag time to count on, I guess.

I should imagine it makes a huge difference when it comes to selling advertising for TV syndication, which in turn means it commands more money for the syndication rights themselves. Also, it could make it easier to get funding for the next film...

Actually, pushing for an Academy Award has become a whole obsession in itself among studios.
Miramax studios was actually heavily criticized a few years back when "Shakespeare in Love" won best picture, because they went on a shameless media blitz to encourage members to vote for their film.
Academy members are generally industry folk, and trade magazines are one of many tools that studios use to get members on their side.
The whole business is quite incenstuous, and objectivity doesn't play much of a part in deciding what films will win.

As for "Farenheit 9/11" I have a feeling it will not get nominated.
While many embraced it leading up to the election, I think it's usefulness has expired, and most members will actually see it as the flawed work that it is.

I think if the election turned out differently it would certainly be nominated and would probably win as well.

I think there's a slight chance it might not even getnominated since it didn't serve its primary purpose; removing Bush from office.

But as long as The Passion doesnt win I'll be happy. Even though I found it entertaining I don't want the fundies to ram its winning down our throat for the next 2000 years.

Every producer who released a film in 2004 is pushing for Best Picture. I'm not sure why MM shouldn't do the same.

True and true. Plus, there can be a post Oscar bump at the box office. F911 isn't out anymore, but in the past, the best picture would sometimes be re-released after the show.

Every producer who released a film in 2004 is pushing for Best Picture. I'm not sure why MM shouldn't do the same.

The other guys learned like, a script, got serious funding, memorized lines, went on location, acted, directed etc. MM knocked 9/11 together in an editing room between doughnuts. A cute reguritation of stock footage and some oh, so clever interviews is akin to Mystery Science Theater 3000 being nominated.

BTW, if I were MM I would do exactly what he is doing. He is fat, crass and ugly but he is still a greedy capitalist and therefore, my brother.

He is making, coincidentially, a new slasher mo.... documentary. Publicity never hurts. Look at that young Thersa Hines Kerry, Paris Hilton.

So? Are you equating budget with quality? So a documentary can't win best picture?

Is Moore going to have any trouble getting funding or anything else for his next film?

Then it deserves to be at least nominated...I mean we are talking about the Oscars here, not some pantheon of great artists.

Not so. Mel Gibson is not pushing "Temptation of the Christ".

If Fahrenheit doesn't get nominated, it will be Moore's fault. He pulled it from consideration for best documentary, for which it would have undoubtably been nominated and maybe would have won.

It won't be nominated for best picture. Too much baggage even for Hollywood. And Christ probably won't be nominated for Best Picture either. Too religious for that crowd.

Either movie may pick up secondary awards. Jim Caviezel may be nominated for his portrayal of Christ which was a brutal undertaking for an actor.
