Japanese scientists say that animals can sense signs of big earthquakes

Japanese scientists proved that mice can predict earthquakes. In the framework of special experiments, scientists irradiated mice with ultra-low frequency electromagnetic waves that were imperceptible for humans.

The guide of the research, Professor Takeshi Yagi from the Osaka University says: "Mice became nervous, started running about the cage and covered their faces with their paws. Some of them even stuck their faces into sawdust in the cage."

I figured as much.

We've known for years that mice and other animals can "sense" earthquakes before they happen.

Isnt this here little critter just adorable...

No, I'm sorry, I cannot predict earthquakes.

This little mouse just wields an oversized pencil.

I confidently predict there will be plenty of earthquakes between now and 2004.

Anyone doing mouse experiments should be made to read the section on mouse maze experiments in 'Surely you're joking, Mr Feynman'

ceptimus.

This didn't prove that mice can predict earthquakes. It proved that mice can detect ultra-low frequency electromagnetic waves. If other experiments have shown that such waves are associated with earthquakes, of course, than that's something else. I know very little about geology, and will leave it to someone else to clarify this.

However, why bother using mice to detect earthquakes if you could just build a ultra-low frequency electromagnetic wave detector and get rid of the biological aspect? It seems to me that this experiment is of minimal practical value.
