It would appear that the esteemed Animal Planet Channel is now taking on the "science" and "existence" of "marine primates" in their upcoming new series titled "Mermaids: Body Found" on Sunday evening at 9pm (EST).

Yes.. webbed fingers, superior breath control. no body hair for streamlined swimming, dolphin herding, special fatty tissue building for warmth, and plenty of fine healthy seafood for substinence !

This somehow sounds vaguely familiar ?

I tried to post a link to it.. but you know me ? All thumbs... Animalplanet.com and Mermaids.

Edit: If someone would be kind and/or interested enough to post a link I would appreciate it ?

ETA: This seems to be typical for most of the links I can find on it. For example...

What if there’s a kernel of truth that lives beneath the legend of the mythic mermaid? Now, …Animal Planet brings viewers into the world where the legend is real. The film blends real-life events and phenomena with the story of two scientists who testify they found the remains of a never-before-identified sea creature.

I notice that the mermaid depicted has long head hair. This would completely negate the "no body hair for streamlined swimming" bit. Imagine the drag from all that long scalp hair!

ETAA:

There's a Wikipedia entry as well...

Mermaids: The Body Found is a two hour Animal Planet mockumentary that premiered in April 2011. It is set to debut in North America in Spring 2012

Thanks Brian-M

I dont know why I have so much trouble linking things on here. Just my ineptness.

But once again.. There are folks with "credentials" attached to their names that are part of something.. that well.. is so silly ?

Hmm, Wikipedia calls it a "mockumentary". The first reference listed calls it a "fake documentary", but complains that it doesn't reveal the fakery till the end, and has a lot of misleading information that may confuse people who don't recognize that the whole thing is BS.

I dunno. If it were presented as an actual documentary, I would certainly be outraged. If it were a full-on mockumentary, making obvious fun of all the footers and other cryptozoology nuts, I'd be overjoyed. As it is, I'm not sure what to think.

Just copy the URL from your address bar while viewing the site and paste it into the post. The site automatically wraps tags around them when you click on...s with http://www. and you'll be okay.

well there is a kernel of truth, or the mythology wouldn't exist, but they seem to have neglected it here yet again
Maybe they should just relabel all the docu channels "Ripley's" and save us all arguing about it
:D

There is an aquatic ape as relative of man theory. I guess it might be possible for a humans to evolve into a water species but like the program stated the "mermaid" would not be pretty to humans living on land at all. Interesting but ugly like a manatee or dugon.

There are just too many sightings and too many worldwide indigenous peoples legends to discount the existence of mermaids. Look how many sunken ships have never been found - and those are stationary. Mermaids don't want to be found. The ocean wilderness is far larger than land, and we know less about the ocean than we do about the moon. We don't even know where the largest whales on earth breed.

I have a confidential report of one being kept at a Monestary in Thailand, and I am looking for donations for an expedition to verify the report. PM me for Western Union details.

it would take several million years. we as a species have been around for around 200,000 years, so no it would not be possible for a human to evolve into a water species, not in the time up til now anyway, and as mermaids are known to have been invented for mythological purposes, your point is moot
:p

I would feel better wiring you cash if I knew you were going to be staying someplace more um.. "mermaidy" on this important expedition ? Say.. like that fake Disney Island place in the Bahamas, ABP ?

Also, when you get one can those that helped to fund the Expediton be there for the "rehydration " of the flipper(s) ?
