mechanical iris

What would you want a 50cm mechanical iris for?

I've only ever used the small ones as variable apertures for optics experiments. I can't imagine anyone making a 50cm one. What is the application?

I can't find anything on that page bigger than 5cm (50mm)

Just scale up a design from a camera lens,

Not quite the same, but it should work

I was so confused until I clicked that link.

"Mechanical Iris? What? New technology? I don't understand!"

I wasn't talking about using the $468 one. That would be expensive! I was thinking of using the 70mm stainless steel one on their site; find a way to computer controle the opening dia. and blow glycol vapor or fog from an ultrasonic water fogger out through it using a bass speaker to puff the vapor or fog out. All this stuff being hidden inside a container made from two stainless steel woks welded together to look like a giant M&M(tm). The rings would blow straight up out the top. This would be a project to do in a few years after I learn all this stuff.:)

Even EO's smaller ones are more expensive compared to, say, a piece of cardboard with a hole cut in it.

But a piece of cardboard can't vary the ring size on the fly either. Water vapor would allow fungi to grow on it to.
