McCain is clearly off his meds...

McCain guarantees victory

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he can “guarantee” a win on Nov. 4 in a squeaker victory that won’t be clear until late that night.

McCain spoke amid signs of a tightening race, and reports of renewed determination among his staff, which is badly outgunned in both money and manpower.

“I guarantee you that two weeks from now, you will see this has been a very close race, and I believe that I'm going to win it,” McCain told interim "Meet" moderator Tom Brokaw. “We're going to do well in this campaign, my friend. We're going to win it, and it's going to be tight, and we're going to be up late.” ...

Of course, even though McCain's campaign will keep fighting, it's not like Obama's people are sitting on their hands. Now if the Dems were being overconfident and lazy, he might have something here - but this year the Dems are not that dumb, not by a long shot.

Face it John, you're done.

It all comes down to the number of voting machines they can rig. Time is running out, and, with early voting, more people have figured out that they need to insist on paper ballots when they have the option. Machines have been observed flipping votes in WVa. That wasn't supposed to happen before the 4th.

I disagree. Every candidate talks themselves up, and they must have a bit of self-belief, or why would they be running for President?

Should McCain declare himself a loser?

Imagine the scene:

"My friends, my fellow Americans, we haven't actually held the election yet, but let's face it, Obama has the total pwnage over me, so, you know, I'm screwed ... oh, and our ideology? ... well, OK, that's bankrupt too. Bye!!!"

Oh, I agree with your point. Of course McCain will keep up the "we're gonna win" rhetoric right up until the end - everyone does that.

It's just that I think he knows he won't win.

As for everyone else here, you're sounding quite a lot like CTers. Is there any evidence you can present of this so-called vote-flipping?

Yeah, Dr Adequate is right. All candidates declare they are going to win. It would hurt the party, especially other congressional races, to give up, even if it was hopeless.

One thing I remember though was something that happened in 1980, when Carter lost to Reagan. It came out after the election that Jimmy knew he was going to lose, and he gathered his family and close advisors to tell them that he knew it, and to discuss how to handle it. Perhaps McCain will do something similar, though I doubt that he will ever make it public.

But the real story here is not that McCain declared he would win, but that he admitted it would be a "squeaker". That is as much as admitting he is a big underdog, something that everybody knows, but that few Republicans will say on the record.

Elections are all about manipulating the perception of reality.

How about some evidence from a website that is halfway objective?

On that first link he provides, scroll down to the story about WV, click on that link, and then scroll down for the story. The link for the paper that printed the story is at the top of the story, so if you want to you can go directly to the paper's website and read the story there.

Here, let me do it for you: Voters Allege Ballot Trouble

ACORN won't honor that guarantee.

I suppose it would be too much to ask that you either show some sort of evidence that people will be showing up at the polls with fake IDs that proclaim them to be Mickey Mouse or whatever the fake names on the registrations were or to stop dragging the acorn chestnut out to wave around like, well like a nut actually?
