Mass shooting in Philadelphia

You'll hear that the real problem is that not enough good guys are packing heat. Because as we all know, the guns owned by the 'law abiding' citizens are blessed with magic talismans that ensure they'll only ever be a "tool" for righteous self defense, and never be found in the hand of a child playing around, or a bullied teen, or a jealous mate, or a suicidal husband, or a drunken family member, or a mentally disturbed relative, or a thief, or a home invader who wrests it from a sleep-addled home owner, or.........

Not only that, but the righteous self defense always works like in the movies. Bad guys go down with one shot, and there's no collateral damage from bullets fired by the good guys.

Fat chance of gun control IMO.

Gun sales are through the roof and the reputation of police being reliable and fair protectors of the streets could not be worse.

Not surprising when you have a President that wants to enact strict gun controls… oh sorry that was the former guy.

So far 8 wounded one arrested, two guns recovered.

Hopefully the wounded will survive.

But doesn't this again demonstrate that there's a serious problem in America with the attitude to guns and the availability of guns to psychopaths ?

It sounds like most if not all will survive:
They included a girl, 17, wounded in the right arm; a man, 21, hit in the right leg; a man, 22, shot once in the back; a woman, 36, shot in the right thigh; a man, 48, grazed in the stomach; a man, 53, hit in the right leg; a man, 70, also shot in the right thigh; and a man, 71, shot once in the stomach and multiple times in both legs.

The run on guns began well before the specter of a Democrat president trying to enact gun control. It began in earnest when the covid hoarding started and only accelerated as the summer of riots and escalating right wing terrorism dragged on. Anecdotally, ammunition has either been sold out or at wildly inflated prices since early spring 2020.

I think a lot of people realized that we're a lot closer to a failed state than they feel comfortable with. Armed right wingers patrol the streets with the implicit (sometime explicit) permission of the police, natural disasters and disease are met with inaction from government, and there's a general atmosphere of "every man for himself".

In such situations, having a gun seems important.

Back when our state first proposed concealed carry, applicants had to pass background checks, and take a certified course on gun-handling, safety, the appropriate laws, and proficiency.
Although there were predictions of a great increase in shooting incidents, that didn’t happen. This was pretty much the case with states enacting similar restrictions.
However, our august legislators here decided to throw all that out the window, and now anyone who can pass the federal background check to buy a gun can carry it as well.

No permit, no license, no training. And... We are getting a whole lot more of these anger-fueled shootings. Road rage, neighborhood arguments, people on mass transit having “issues” with each other..... We get such incidents several times a week.

And to top this off, our legislators want to pass a law making it illegal enforce any federal restrictions in the state. (Which is ludicrous, but hell, that’s Missouri lawmakers)

Not sure this one belongs in politics. More a SI&CE thing.

The shooting took place in da hood, in a no-carry city. Gonna go out on a limb and say the guns were probably illegal and carried illegally. We have a standing thread for Today's Mass Shootings.

So anybody who can buy a handgun can carry it concealed? Who thinks that makes any sense? I never had much of a concern about the standard CCP; bad guys don't usually submit to fingerprint background checks. But now there are no restrictions at all?

Some of these localities require permits to conceal carry a handgun, but open carrying a rifle requires none.

So you can't carry a pea shooter in you purse without a license, but you can stroll the crowded streets with an AR-15 loaded with a 100rd drum without a license.

Most concealed carry requires a permit, or is banned. IIRC, only sparsely populated Vermont functions like you are suggesting, with no restrictions at all.

Eta: although it seems Missouri has joined the ranks, my mistake.

Yes

Who thinks that makes any sense?

Republicans.

Well you are not supposed to be barred from owning a handgun federally.

This is becoming increasingly common in red states.

Quick! To the "Thoughts and Prayers"-mobile!

And blast right past the Culture of Violence exit on you way to Gungrabberville.

This shooting is the second recorded shooting with at least eight victims of the total 56 mass shootings so far this year.

When I see leg and thigh injuries, I think femoral artery. Those may be in trouble assuming the description is accurate. The 71 year old also.

The real problem is that such incidents keep on happening in the US and there is no motivation to stop it or even try to prevent it. Or even pay lip service to any solution or proposed solution. All we get is armed guards in schools, or arm the teachers and what not. As if that would make it better by adding more guns.

Owning a handgun for the purpose of protecting your home and property is one thing; packing heat on the streets is something else. That's a relatively recent development, in historical terms.
