Martin Parr

Martin Parr, the photographer has died, aged 73.

I never rated him much, but plenty of others did - iirc he was a Magnum Photos member.
He got into Magnum by one vote, and against the opposition of Magnum founder Henri Cartier-Bresson (he of the "decisive moment"), though they were later reconciled. https://www.magnumphotos.com/events/exhibitions/martin-parr-x-henri-cartier-bresson/

His early work was good, but not as important as when he switched to colour and helped redefine the norms of art photography, which at the time pretty much only accepted monochrome as valid. His work is full of humour, as well as acute observation and social commentary. His collection of photobooks, which is now held by the Tate, and his championing of the format, are also significant contributions to British photography. His Foundation, based in Bristol, is a showcase for new and established photographers, as well as being a resource for research and education.

I saw him speak at a conference a couple of years ago, and he was at his foundation one of the times I visited there.
