NASA HEADQUARTERS MARS-ROVER OPPORTUNITY PRESS BRIEFING MARCH 2

Significant findings from NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity, now exploring Meridiani Planum on Mars,
will be announced at a press briefing at 2 p.m. EST, Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at NASA Headquarters, Washington.

The briefing will originate from the James E. Webb Auditorium, 300 E St., S.W., Washington, and will be carried
live on NASA TV with two-way question-and-answer capability for reporters covering the event from
participating NASA centers.

Dr. Ed Weiler, Associate Administrator, Office of Space Science at NASA Headquarters, will make opening
remarks. The panelists include:

--Professor Steve Squyres, Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Principal Investigator, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
--Professor John Grotzinger, MER science team geologist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge,
Mass.
--Dr. Benton C. Clark III, MER science team member and Chief Scientist of Space Exploration, Lockheed Martin
Space Systems Astronautics Operations, Denver
--Dr. Joy Crisp, MER Project Scientist, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
--Dr. Jim Garvin, Lead Scientist for Mars and the Moon, NASA Headquarters

NASA Television is available on AMC-9, transponder 9C, C-Band, located at 85 degrees west longitude. The
frequency is 3880.0 MHz. Polarization is vertical, and audio is monaural at 6.80 MHz. Audio of the broadcast
will be available on voice circuit at the Kennedy Space Center on 321/867-1220.

I am so excited about the press briefing. Rumor has it that they will say they have discovered water and fossilized microscopic life.

If it is true I am anxious to see the reaction of certain groups that humans are not the only lifeform in the universe.;)

I hope they found her!

Gearing up to buy a thoat, aren't you?

I expect it's just strong evidence for water, not life. That would be way cool, though. WAY cool.

did

Well, actually, no. it CAN be liquid water. They have been speculating that the water (if it is that) is actually a thick brine (saltwater). Saltwater freezes at much lower temperatures then pure water (hence why you use salt to thaw your porch/driveway of ice in the winter) and the more salt that is in it, the lower the temp can get before it freezes.

if the brine is particularily thick (imagine a giant sea slooooooooowly evaporating down to virtually nothing, like the Great Salt Lake is doing) it can still remain liquid a very, very low temps.

I believe that that is what they are finding and I think (hope) that is what they are going to announce.

There is speculation that they have find microbial fossils too, but that just seems too good to be true, so while I'll hope for that, I'll be excited to get see water in the press release.

Exciting stuff either way.

I believe that if it were liquid water, or especially clear signs of life, they never would have been able to keep the secret until today. I'm guessing it's just good indicators of past water. I would like to be wrong, however.

So, what time is 2 pm EST in UT? (Or GMT, for those of us still using old money)

Well I am watching the press conference, as I type, and they say they have found rocks that had been submerged in water "for some time" had been eroded by water. Also they are saying the "blueberrys" that they found are concretions.

"Habitable" doesn't mean it was inhabited, but it's certainly encouraging, and we can hope that these results will direct future exploration in a way that will get the most results as quickly as possible.

I think we should send landers to check out the "Mars Face." :D

They are speculating that Opportunity is sitting in what may have been an ancient sea or lake, possibly as big as one of the Great Lakes in the USA (I live in Michigan, surronded by them, heh).

That is a lot of water. They should be able to get all kinds of data from that.

I'd say their next step is to send a drilling 'bot' there that can drill down say 10-20 feet. I bet it is moist down there at the least. A good place as any to start looking for wet soil, microbial evidence, biological processes, etc.

The surface looks too harsh, but I bet you wouldn't have to go very deep at all to find a different story. Plus, soil and depth provide insulating factors to shield stuff from some of the temperature changes the surface faces.

It's simply more evidence to back the notion of Bible inerrancy. The Great Flood of Noah's time was even more extensive then anyone realized. Hoowee!

Nope - they went straight to the pyramid ...

On a more serious note: This might be one of the greatest discoveries in history.

And they even call that bit of Mars's history the Noachian. What else could it mean?

There is vast maze of glass tunnels beneath the surface of mars, giant worms live in these tunnels.

These worms produce a spice, a spice which allows the travel through space and time...
