Making a clip from a DVD

I'm trying to create a clip from a DVD and need some advice.

I have a DVD that was originally a VHS programme off-air that I transferred to DVD. There is about a 20 second clip in it that I want to convert into either a MPEG or WMV clip (AVI is acceptable but prefer the first two).

I'm running XP, have DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and some other apps if they are of use.

If I need to download software to do this, I want freeware or shareware.

Anyone recommend a good method / software / etc? I've seen the topic mentioned in a few forums but they normally are talking about pay-for-it software.

The first links to a guide to turn a DVD to an AVI using Gordian Knot and the second is a tutorial about AutoGK which automates the Gordian Knot.

You may have to rip the dvd to the hard drive, its explained in the first link.
Then use AutoGK to convert to a single file.
