So what's everyone's prediction for MacWorld Expo 2008, which takes place in the middle of January, and is anyone excited about it? As far as I can see, we should expect the following:

1: A sub-notebook which uses flash memory instead of a HDD.

2: A new model of the iPhone, with 3G and a few more features that were missing from the original release.

3: New releases in the iPod Touch range, with increased storage capacity.

Personally, I doubt I'll splash out on any of the above, at least not in the immediate future. I'm in the market for an Apple notebook, but I'll probably get a MacBook. The iPhone is too expensive at the moment, but if a new one offers 3G, picture messaging, SMS with multiple recipients and video recording, I'll take an interest.

Finally, if anyone wants to debate the relative merits of the Mac vs the PC, please start a new thread, or resurrect one of the old ones. Let's keep this thread about MacWorld. :)

I'm going to buy an iPhone and also a PowerBook. But I'm going to wait until after MacWorld, because I suspect there will be some new models. Especially the iPhone.

Oh, and Windows sucks. :)

I'm hoping for a refresh of the Mac Pro, so I can one-up DoubtingStephen (who has dual-quadcore Mac Pro)....

I'm betting on ultra-portable or just a new, thinner Macbook. iPhone update later in the year. And yeah, maybe a memory change for the Touch. Oh, and appleTV update.

I am hoping that they up the basic RAM. Though I know they make a lot of money by making you buy more from them.

*dream* And the education discount is now 50% off!

Seriously, it has gotten so tiny. I want a mac, but now I only get fifty bucks off.[/angst]

There is a lot of speculation that there will be an ultra-thin MacBook with Flash-based "disk" instead of a hard drive. Perhaps it will have an LED backlit display like the current MacBook Pro.

The next time the AppleTV gets bumped it may be a big change.

And the rumors of a Penryn based Mac Pro continue.

Oh, and appleTV update.

I forgot that one. I reckon Apple TV will have games facilities added, a little like the iPod. The guy who left Xbox Live to join Popcap Games said he's overseeing the conversion of their titles to new formats, and listed Apple TV as one. It would seem a logical move, too - download 'em through iTunes, beam them over to your Apple TV unit and play them with - erm, I guess that's the sticking point - hand controllers. Hopefully Apple will release a new wireless controller and not just use the ATV's remote. I guess we'll find out next month...

I would love to see an iPod touch with disk-based memory instead of flash so we could have 160 gb capapcity instead of the puny 16 gb available now. But I'm sure they would consider that a huge step backwards so I'm not holding my breath.

Me too! I was anticipating the Touch when they announced it, and was sorely dissappointed when the max capacity was announced. I need something to replace my 60G '5.5' which is nearly full.

The "flash-based-harddrives" are available now. They're called Solid-State Hard Drives and you could easily swap out your traditional hard drive for one.

At this point in time though (and most likely any plans Mac has for 2008), Solid-State is something most of us can't afford. A 32gb currently runs you US$1300 and a 128gb runs $5000.

A few PC manufacturers have been offering these as options on new PC's for about 6 months.

Mac Pro just updated! 8 core standard, using the new 45nm chips.

Well they got that out of the way, now more time to show cool stuff on stage!

The Apple Store's down. Looks like they're updating ready for a big announcement...

I'm making a prediction...whatever Steve Jobs announces (in about an hour) I will want (unless it's another Apple TV) and will not be able to afford.

I think you're somewhat off concerning current prices on Solid-State drives. At least on one online retail site, one can find a 32gb OEM laptop drive for around $400. A 128gb drive is rather more expensive, though (pity, I would love to have a few for my system...:cry1)

The Apple home page invites you to watch the keynote this afternoon, with the teaser line "There's something in the air". I wonder what that could mean?

I feel so geeky for just watching the entire stream from macrumors.com's spoiler-free link page. Meaning, I didn't know beforehand what was going to be announced.

That man can speak. Either that or he just has very contageous enthusiasm. I caught myself getting excited even about the Apple TV, and feeling anxious when the Flickr thing didn't work. Oh, and I just realized where I'd seen that hacker kid from the newest Die Hard before.

As for the MacBook Air - neat, but not my thing considering it's nearly as expensive as a MacBook Pro, which has useful stuff such as an ethernet port and firewire built in. Oh, and an optical drive. I'd really like that extended trackpad, though.

The Macbook Air isn't really for me, as it's marketed for people who travel a lot and don't want to lug a heavy laptop around. Still pretty cool though.

I like their move into movie rentals, and the apple TV update. It is much more sensible now.

For those of us who do travel, it's nice to have a lightweight option. Apple hasn't really had one since they stopped making the 12 inch powerbook.
